My new FAL....

Rick Freeman, the guy that owns our local gunshop is a friend of mine and he gave me a good deal. I did a no-money trade. My Carbon-15, with Ultra-Dot sight and 10 magazines, traded for a brand new STG-58 FAL in an Imbel receiver from Federal Arms. It gets better. Also in the trade he's going to order me 5 extra 20 round metric magazines (the rifle comes with one) AND a fifty dollar scope mount! What a great deal!

FYI,
Current FA catalog price:
STG 58 - $549.00 (AIM also)
New metric mags from various places $7.20-$10 each. I just bought 10 new for $72 shipped from AIM. HTH

you traded a $1k rifle and mags that run an average of $12-20ea depending on condition for a $600 rifle
have anything else for sale?
DSA rifles considered to be one of the best FN clones on the market (not even including the clones built by some of the better gunsmiths) retails for $1400 new !
gunplumber, rich@cgw azearms and george gouger build some of the best kit guns out there
WHY did you get a parts gun that even though works is (sometimes) known to need a redo by one of the above mentioned?

My C15 was not new. I couldn't have gotten more than 600 from a dealer for it. Besides, the FAL was the only .308 I could afford. I want an M1A, but I can't get one. I was simply tired of the AR-15 family and .223. I didn't trade to make money or anything. I go through guns. In the last year, I've owned an AK-47, an SKS, and a Bushmaster XM15E2s, none of which I own any longer. 'Sides, a FAL will be easier to get parts for, has longer range, and is more powerful. I simply don't have 1200 dollars for a new accurized FAL or a Springfield or 2400 for a genuine HK91....

And, now that you've got me thinking about it, if I need to get it worked on, first off, I'm gonna call Federal Arms and complain. Secondly, I'll get it fixed, and then I'll have a "personalized" rifle that I can count on. I'm acutally not planning on keeping it forever, unless I somehow totally fall in love with it. I'm going to get a Springfield M1A as soon as I can afford one, after college.

if you feel parts are easy to get for an fn you are partially correct.
between DSA, Entreprise arms and others parts are available. however parts such as the bolt, carrier, etc are still not being mfg here (at least not yet) and the price of stg kits is going up. but yes the fn is a nice rifle (own a few myself) so good luck and have fun shooting it.
also if you are going to scope it, i as others have found the DSA scope mount to be the best one available to date. it maintains zero even after removing numerous times.

My package comes with a "euro-sniper" scope mount, which my dealer will put on for me. I"ll also have him give it a once-over to make sure there are no obvious flaws.

I've heard I may have to mess with gas regulation to get the bolt catch to function. Any tips?

If your "euro-sniper" scope mount is a dust cover with a weaver rail riveted on, just say no and gat a hold of a DSA (or similar) mount. JMHO

DSA makes one of the best scope mounts on the market for a good price. No need to have anyone instal it either it replaces the old cover. E Z as 123

Congrats on the new purchase! I'm sure you will love the FAL... let us know how it shoots.

(BTW: just IMO, but you did a good thing trading the Carbon for the FAL. )

Nightcrawler, you essentially paid top dollar for the FAL, but that's ok. She's yours now, and that's that. Let's get that gas system set up for you. BTW, setting the gas system is not "playing." Playing conjers thoughts of goofing with things to make it work...much like a cheap pistol. We're going to "set" your gas system, becaus it was built to work in a battlefield, and is adjustable to deal with all kinds of dirt and crud.

Make sure the rifle is unloaded!
Push the gas adjustment wheel to #7 (use the point of a cartridge or a small screwdriver)
load rifle with one round and fire.
If bolt did not lock to the rear (witch I doubt) move the wheel to #6 and try again. Continue this until the bolt stays back. There is a setting between every number (like this 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and so on) go back and forth with this until the bolt will stay back after the last round reliably. The closer to 7 that you are, the better you are treating your rifle and your shoulder. As the rifle dirties up, you can adjust your rifle closer to setting #1. If you try this and you're still confused, please give us a shout.
