My new carry gun.

Just bought a S&W 3913. I originally bought it for my wife, but am so impressed with it, that I am making it my own. Its a nice compact, skinny piece. It appears to be well constructed and all the edges are smoothed. I plan on wringing it out on the range this week. Knife shown is my trusty Spyderco Native. An excellent knife.

Nice gun -- Excellent choice.

While this does not seem to be the opinion of most post'ers on this board, I think that S&W makes the best pistols (notice, I didn't say revolvers) -- they're solidly built, reliable, nice looking, etc. Additionally, I prefer the traditional DA/SA type of pistol with a manual safety.

Enjoy.

I'll follow up FUD's post:

While I do not prefer them- they are great pistols! I think that S&W has suffered more from lack of adequate marketing than lack of adequate product, IMO.

If I was going to get a SW I too would get the 3913 or the 6906. Cool!

Congratulations! A SW 6906 served my father well for years. It chugged through hundreds of rounds of cheap, FMJ, JHP and reloads without a burp. I don't think your 3913 will be any different. Now get some good leather for it. An Alessi Talon Plus would be just the ticket.

I am a real skeptic when it comes to S&W autos. I would really like to hear back after your range session if you still like the S&W and if you shoot it against other pistols.

Rob43,

S&W pistols got a bad rap because their first generation guns were truly a POS -- maybe worse than anything ever around. Their second generation pistols came a long way, although they still had some problems. Their third generation pistols are top of the line.

I own a Para-Ordnance, a Hi-Power Browning, etc.; but a full-size S&W pistol sits in my nightstand. And it use to be my carry gun until I moved to a hotter part of the country -- I now carry a Micro Kahr because of it's size but if S&W came out with something around the same size, I would switch in an instant.

If you haven't tried S&W autos since their third generations came out, you may want to give them a second look -- I doubt that you will be disappointed (P.S.: Stay away from the Sigma series and stick with their traditional line of pistols).

In 1996 I was in the market for a light weight, somewhat smallish pistol in 9mm. Smith's 3913 seemed to fit the bill. When I got around to fondling one, I saw that the same mechanical pistol was offered as a Lady Smith (3913L). Best I could tell, it was identical except for the cosmetics; instead of black grips, they were gray, the area of the pistol from the trigger guard up toward the barrel was more slanted, and, of course, the name Lady Smith was engraved in the slide. Otherwise, no differences found; same weight, trigger pull, trigger reach, etc.

I liked the looks of it, and since it was for concealled carry, the Lady Smith engraving didn't make any difference. I figure no B/G will know the difference if the 9mm round were to come from a Lady Smith.

The thing is a shooter! And accurate! Has eaten everything I fed it without the slightest burp. The only thing I think that needs nentioning is that the barrel flip took me a little time to adjust. My "standard" carry weapon is a HiPower, but when I need something smaller and/or lighter, I carry the 3913L.

Well, there is one slight problem; my wife is showing a fondness for it.

Numbers,

If you're wife really wants the 3913L, you can always let her have it and get yourself a 3913TSW (I understand that you can get it without the black rail option under the barrel but it costs more not to have the rail).

FUD,

The 3913 Tactical came just after I had bought the 3913L. I have to say I blanched a little green with envy! I dared not fondle it too much or I would come down with a case of what my wife calls "IWO" (I Want One).

That's a good looking pistol, FUD.

I've shot SW 3rd Gen autos side by side with SIG Sauers, Berettas and Glocks, and I can tell you that the SW hold their own. They're fine pistols.

What's the rail for on the Tactical 3913? Sorry folks, but for me nothing beats the clean lines of the original 3913.

Allen_Raiford,

You may also want to look at the 4013 -- it's only slightly larger (by less than a quarter of an inch) than the 3913 but it's a .40S&W instead of a 9mm and it holds one extra round.
