My New Blackhawk!

I am pretty new to these forums, so take it easy on me!

But I figure being 19 years old, most people assume us young bucks only go for the glocks and ar-15's and whatever else is tactical... Yawn

I finally got my dream gun, I spent the last 2 years looking for the right revolver...

I fell in love as soon as I saw it

It's a Ruger New model Blackhawk convertable in .45 long colt and .45 ACP.
Lipseys exclusive: it's a medium frame flattop, 4 5/8 barrel with simulated ivory gunfighter grips and adjustable sights.

Long story short, I've always been a fan of the old westerns ie: John Wayne, Clint Eastwood being my favorites. I searched for one I liked even before being able to purchase one without my father over my shoulder. I was on armslist here in Michigan 8 months ago and about an hour from me was this beauty, I looked and messaged the original owner and he said long story short that he'd only take cash and it's firm at $550. so I dropped it and kept looking, not finding any that weren't shot out or just one caliber (I was set on a convertable for ease of calibers, I don't reload... Yet!) anywho... I looked around some more because now I had some cash saved up. I found one in .357 and 9mm and he fell through on the deal. Dissapointed I got on armlist last week I looked again and this one was back up, with obo on the title, and talked the girlfriend into letting me get it, I offered $500 and picked it up this week.

It has a feature where the cylinder clicks into lineup with the ejector rod

I guessed $500 was a small price for my dream gun, especially it being brand new NEVER fired still in the plastic chambered in the classic 45 long colt and the "fairly" easy to get ACP in the box with all the paperwork/plastic. I didn't know what I got myself into, being a pretty big gun buff I need to know exactly what I have. Turns out it's an exclusive from lipseys and it's got a few bells and whistles from what I have read, it has a medium frame flattop like the original Blackhawks and a better trigger and a few other parts in steel. I have yet to go shoot it, hopefully tomorrow I will. I'm really excited with the whole deal, the gunfighter grips are a dream and fit my hand perfectly! If anyone has any more info on it I would much appricate it, along with advice for shooting or any good links to someone who makes a great holster for it.

Let me know what you think! Thanks for reading!

I have 11 single action revolvers. They are my favorite guns to bang away with and carry when we trail ride our horses. Your new gun is one I wish I owned. Well done sir.

Lipsey's Blackhawk

I have a twin to your baby. I think you did it just right. You have the original size blackhawk frame and the original shape grip frame.
Compare some other ruger single actions in your hand and you will like yours even better.

Order up some hot 45 Colt loads from DoubleTap for a real thrill.
That's a beautiful Blackhawk.
I miss the 45 Colt Blackhawk I used to own.

Well as an "old buck" to a young one....you will NEVER regret buying that Ruger. Great lookin' piece, my friend, and one that'll serve you for a lifetime...let me offer one bit of advice...don't ever sell it...pass it on to your grand-kids. I've got four of those Flat Tops, but not that .45, a mistake on my part. And BTW, those grips really set off the blued frame and barrel.

Get it to the range ASAP and let us all know how it shoots for you. Save your brass, you'll soon be in the reloading game to feed it.

Next is a good holster to pack it in. Might I suggest one of the old Tom Threepersons types with an open top? It's a tried and true design, just under a century old and will serve you well. Below is a pic of one of my .44's in a home made version, but you can find any number of commercial makers that have similar offerings. I like a simple, basically, unadorned look in a belt holster and this one exemplifies that preference. It fits well enough to preclude a keeper thong or strap as well.

Building your own holster is not a terribly difficult project...and for less than $50 in leather and basic tools, you'll have something of yourself in your rig. PM me if want advice or directions on how to do it.

Congrats on a superb choice. Rod

You are a man after my own heart!

You have reinforced my hope for the younger generation!

Ooops! Missed that part about talking the "girlfriend into letting me get it." Either set her straight, or run!

Great choice, what ever your age.
A similar one in .44 was also my first center fire handgun.
Now you need a lever action rifle to go with it.
And what's this about needing your girl friend's permission to buy it?
What would John Wayne have to say about that?

Rodfac- I just got a text from a guy on armslist locally he's looking for his old leather holster and a camo hunting one, he just decided to give to me! But I will see about making my own rig! I love your setup!

g.willikers- lol I know, but she's been waiting for her own handgun, so me finding mine was kinda putting off hers.. But now she wants a revolver instead of whatever she was thinking in .22 so I figure I could always go find a Single-Six

Thanks everyone! I should be shooting it today, is there any suggestions on shooting?

That's a beautiful Blackhawk.
It is a beautiful Blackhawk, and the gunfighter grips are really comfortable, IMO. I would avoid the really hot loads, however, since, as you know, it is built on the medium frame with it correspondingly smaller cylinder. I don't know what pressures Double Tap are loaded to, but generally it is said the medium frame .45s are good up to around 23,000 psi. It is advised to avoid the "Ruger Only" loads that can surpass 30,000 psi. The smaller flattop Blackhawk with its gunfighter grips and all steel frame is a beauty. I hope you enjoy it. It's a hoot with .45 acp, too.

is there any suggestions on shooting?
Yeah, no end of them.
Depending on what you already know, of course.
If you run into any problems or disappointments at the range, call back.
And don't be discouraged if your girl friend outshoots you.
Wimmin are noted for doing that.

Doesn't get ANY better. You'll enjoy it. Mine are all 5 1/2" barrels, but no matter :) .... The .45 Colt on the medium frame is a winner!!!!

No tips, other than 'hold on'. Not sure of your experience, so for the first times out just get a feel for the caliber. Single Actions take a bit more practice to shoot accurately than other revolvers and pistols.

I've learnt something from this thread's OP:

Courtesy of static electricity, one's tongue will tingle for a good 10 mins after licking a computer monitor.

I mean, really... That gun is just about perfect!
Perfect size, perfect colours and a great calibre! Jealousy reigns supreme in the PJP household tonight...

I heartily wish I could justify a single-action....:(

Hey everyone! Thanks for the posts!

I just walked in from shooting her with the .45 ACP ( the whole 6 rounds I found in the house) and other than needing a lot more range time and a lot more ammo she shoots like a dream, I hit 3/6 at 25 yards, i was in a hurry though with it being 5 degrees outside and windy as all get out here in Michigan. I think it's the best recoil I've ever had with any type of handgun.. I think I got more recoil out of a 9mm or .40 than out of this Blackhawk!!! It's super sweet in my hands and has almost no muzzle jump with the ACP! I fell deeper in love today!:D
