My New 1911--What Will It Be? Help.

OK, folks, I'm at the precipice of purchasing a brand spanken new 1911 for target shooting. I'm not sure that I will ever compete (maybe just hang out at the range with all my favorite people), but who the heck knows. My question is, which 1911 will it be?

I'm currently looking at a Kimber Stainless Gold Match and am wondering whether I should spend just a couple/few hundred dollars more for one of those custom guns (Les Baer, Wilson, Rock River Arms, etc.). I'm not going to spend $3,000, that's for sure, but $1,000 to $1,500 (maybe as high as $1,800) isn't out of the question. Will I notice the difference? If I'm primarily a plinker, should I spend $700 on a Stainless Target Kimber, and call it a day? Any opinions out there would be welcome. I'm not young anymore, but I'm very impressionable (and trusting in TFLer advice).

Thanks.

Depends on what you want. I can only relate my experience: I have a stainless Gold Match and not only is it the most accurate and sweet shooting gun I have ever fired, it has not malfunctioned once out of over 6,000 rounds fired.

If you don't mind waiting 6 or 7 months I'd say go with Rock River Arms. Can't get better than having a gun built to your specs and if you're not sure what you want they'll give you all the help you need. Having said all that,I have a Les Baer Premier II that is the most accurate handgun I've ever shot. RRA,from what I've heard can make something similar for 1/3 less money. Good luck. :)

No flame towards you Ronin but how can you say a comparable Rock River Arms 1911 to a Premier II is 1/3 less the cost? A comparable one is the Basic Limited Match with adjustable sights. Which runs $1395. The Standard Match runs $1025 but has fixed sights and no 30 lpi checkering.

The Premier II runs around $1450 and basically the same features as the Basic Limited Match.

People are always saying how cheap the RRA's are compared to the Baers, Wilsons, etc but if you match up gun with roughly the equivalent parts, price is not that much lower.

Anyway, get either a Basic Limited Match, Premier II, or Wilson Millennium Protector (WITH adjustable sights) if you want a target/plinker gun.

In my searching for the best 1911 money could by, I decided to order a Wilson Millineum Protector. When I went to order this $1300.00 beauty I found that this pistol would fit my every need. The perfect 1911 :D Nothing could top it...except for the Springfield loaded that I ordered instead on my $800.00 budget :D

I've read many times over that Kimber and Springfield Armory offer the best value in out-of-the-box production 1911s today. However, a pre-series 70 Colt National Match is hard to beat. They are getting difficult to find, but can be picked up essentially NIB in your price range.

Son,
Shame on me for repeating what I had read without checking it out (still haven't), though I'm sure you could have been more polite in pointing it out.

you could get a Springfield Trophy match for about $100 more than the Stainless Target.

If your going the high Dollar route, skip the Wilson's and Les Baer and go for a Nowlin or Ed Brown.

Then again - the Standard Springfield 1911A1 is a fantastic deal and you can get them closer to 500 bucks than anything else mentioned. Its a gun that can take serious punishment and you wont be afraid to punish it.

Ronin,

1. I do not see how my corrections with your error was rude in any sense.

2. In the future if you wish to point these "flaws" I have out, please do so via email. Since you posted it, I'll do the same.

Simple fact, RRA makes a nice gun. Overhyped though... There guns are close to the prices of many of Wilsons and some of Baer's. I do not see why everybody jumps up and down yelling they are such a bargain.

THANKS MUCH! As always, I appreciate your advice. I will let you know which direction to take. My early inclinations? A Wilson Millenium Protector with adjustable sights. But, then again, my mind changes like the wind. I'll buy what I buy when I buy it. That about sums it up. Thanks again.
