My Mutt 870............every pet needs a name........

A while back Arrington's had their trade in 870's for a pretty good deal and I picked up a couple. Ended up selling one and keeping one. It's an 870 Wingmaster 2 3/4" only that was an Asheville PD gun. Haven't run the serial number yet to see what year it dates to, but it's a pre-flextab gun.

It had wood that looked like utter hell. Like it had been used as a boat paddle in a rocky creek for most of it's life. Luckily I had an extra Police forend and an extra express stock with R3 recoil pad in the parts bin. They went on the gun along with a Remington sling studded mag cap and a Butler Creek sling.

It's been riding around in that configuration in my truck now for a bit. I was rummaging around in the shop this evening, looking for something or other, didn't find it, but did find an extra Remington +2 extension with clamp and spring that I forgot I had. Trouble is the extension is OD Green and the rest of the gun isn't. The clamp was also parked, where the gun itself is blued. Go figure.

Now the clamp didn't have a sling stud in it. Remington sent me the wrong one when I ordered a clamp set with sling stud awhile back and I complained. They sent me another one with sling stud and let me keep the incorrect one gratis. Nice huh?

But I like slings on my shotguns and this clamp had no front sling attachment point. What to do?? What to do?? Didn't want to order another part. So I got to looking at the stud sticking out the front of the factory replacement mag cap. Guess what? A small e-clip held it in place. Took it off and voila...... a perfect fit in the Remington factory mag clamp. My 4+1 Truck 870, just became an uglier 6+1 Truck 870.

So I now present the mutt 870.........It needs a name........Can't call it Frankenstein. That name's already taken by one of Dave McC's guns.......Suggestions??

Honestly it kinda reminds me of an old Johnny Cash song "One Piece at a Time". Maybe it's the "psychobilly 870".

Heinz.

Or the eternal favorite...George.
(As in, "I'll love him and pet him, and name him ...):D

Polly.

As in Polychrome, for the varigated finishes.

or Justin, as in Justin Case.

Or use Frankenstein, I doubt Mary Shelley minds and she has much more claim to that than I.

Polly has a nice ring to it.

A fellow on our local forum suggested "Sue" (following my Johnny Cash train of thought I suppose :)).

Whatever her name ends up being I'll give her a workout at the range on Saturday to make sure the extension functions well with this gun. I trust it will, but in the infamous words of Reagan "Trust but Verify".

Update to the Mutt build.......

One gripe I have with these old Wingmaster 18" barrels is the bead directly on barrel. It sets me up for shooting a bit high. I was considering adding an XS 24/7 bead to this gun, but that's a glue on arrangement and rather pricey at 60.00+shipping.

Last week I was perusing the EE over at AR15.com. Ran across someone with a 6-48 Marbles Tritium front bead NIB for cheap. Had never run across the Marbles setup before but it's higher than the existing bead and the tritium is a nice touch. Got it for 25.00 to my door. Brownells gets 33.99 +shipping for it.

So I bought it and it arrived here at Casa de RR. Then I learned that my old 870 Wingmaster police trade was not a 6-48 thread tap like the newer Remingtons. Well a drill and tap job later and the site is installed. Took me about 30 mins and most of that time was setting up to ensure my gun was level in the vise so I was drilling and tapping square. Also had to rig a small plastic shim between sight and gun to get the sight to line up properly, but that was no biggie.

I think the mutt is complete. I may refinish the wood to match at some point, but it's no rush. Looking forward to the next range trip so I can see if this Marble bead shoots where I look.

Well you could name her Deadly... That is this catch dog's name...
She hits like a freight train and don't let go until I "choke" her off the hog... And she will hunt her own prey too...
