Well the latest in what I've done to my Pietta copy of a .44 caliber Remington NMA w/ 5.5" barrel.

Well as many here may remember I:
Reamed the chambers from .4460 - .4510
Opened up the nipple area for a Snail capper.
Opened up the loading window to accomodate the larger conicals for it.
Throated & Crowned the barrel.
Smoothed & Tuned the action.
Redesigned the Cylinder pin for removal from the short barrel.

With all of that I've turned this Lil Cannon into a Lee 220gr. Conical launching machine with capable accuracy w/ 28gr. FFFG Goex of 2.0" average benched at 25 yards.
Now to give it a nice worn slightly old look I've browned it.

So here ya go, my Lil Cannon.

This is great.....Are any photos available of the work in progress?

I would be very interested in seeing some of the techniques.

Yup that was the modification I did with the cylinder pin.

Raider2000 or others - I haven't handled one of these shorter barreled Remies - Great looking job Raider! Nice looking pistol. I have a question on the cylinder pin - with this length barrel, are you not able to pull the cylinder pin far enough forward to take the cylinder out? Why is it necessary - or why do you makee the alterations to the cylinder pin? I've heard of others altering the cylinder pin on theirs but I'm curious as to why it's done? Many thanks!

Well with mine with the 5.5" barrel & the loading lever lug in place the cylinder pin does have plenty of room to remove the cylinder from the frame but when you clean it the areas around the pin has to be addressed more closely because you can not completely remove the pin from the gun because of the loading lever lug being in the way, I just made the modifications to the cylinder pin so that it could be completely removed for cleaning.

Now guys that have cut their barrels shorter than mine like 4.75" may have a slight issue getting the pin out far enough for the cylinder to be removed if the loading lever lug is in place & the pin was not modified like mine.
 
Seeing as how this is the black powder forum, I was hoping to see an actual cannon :p.

Raider - thanks for the explanation - that all makes sense! I was wondering if the cylinder pin would hit the lug and not allow you to remove the cylinder but now I understand why you did what you did - which by the way, you did a terrific job on! I love the way your pistol looks - gives me incentive to get rid of some of the blue on mine! Many thanks! bedbug
 
Hey there Raider, haven't heard from you in a while. Nice looking remi !!! The browning looks awesome. Did you take off all the factory blue first? What did you use? I heard vinegar or lemon juice will take it mostly down to bare steel.

Basically I used some 1000 grit paper to get it off in most places, I was looking for the old worn look & thought to experiment with leaving some of the old bluing on it which it turned out better than I expected.

Yeah been off & on here & there with the sights because of either work, family or on occasion hunting.
