My first SKS

Been "lurking" here for a couple of month's. Lots of GOOD INFO!!!

Never had a 'semi center fire' but, took the bait and just came home with a 7.62 x 39 SKS to get started with.

It's a Chinese version. Numbers match on the Upper (Slide/Bolt Assembly???) and Lower (where the magazine and trigger assemble attach). Havn't 'dissassembled' it yet to check further.
Ordered some Stripper Clips and a Manual from 'SKSMAN.com'

I REALLY want to shoot this thing this weekend. I've read/followed the 'Von Fat Man' thread on his first SKS
but need to know what "PRECAUTIONS" I should take.
Plan on bagging it in tight and firing a couple of rounds via 'string' and then would like to try sighting it in starting at 25 yds to get on the paper and working out to 100 yds for now.

Any and ALL info would be greatly appreciated.

I have pretty good experience with Revolvers (Colt Tropper MK III 357) Pistols (Sig P239 9mm) Too many Bolt, Pump and Lever Action rifles and Shotguns to rember.

Welcome AyeAye to TFL. Just got a Russian SKS myself. I think the biggest advice I've heard is just leave 'em alone, buy a bunch of cheap ammo and HAVE FUN. These SKS's have to be one of the all-time rifle "best buys". Rugged, reliable, inexpensive to buy and inexpensive to shoot.
I've read some mixed reviews on Wolf ammo for our SKS's. It's dirty or inaccurate. You know what? I don't care! I just ordered a bunch of Wolf. I'm going to have a ball just blastin' away. I don't care if it's not tack drivin' stuff. Winchester, Remington, and federal are a total ripoff in 7.62X39 Russian.
A great SKS enthusiests site is www.simonov.net Have fun with that thing.....Best Regards, J. Parker

precautions -- YES!! Don't know if you know this already, but I'll say it anyhow...

#1 important -- shake the bolt and make sure the firing pin freely moves back and forth. If the rifle has been stored in gunk for a while, the pin may be stuck. If the pin is stuck, you're virtually guaranteed a slamfire.

An SKS was my very first "real" gun, bought it with a friend along for advice only slightly more knowledgeable than me at the time, and lo and behold -- as he let the bolt fly forward the first time, a round of 7.62x39 went hurtling into the heavens.

 was me..

After verifying the firing pin is free, still load the magazine with ONLY ONE ROUND first time out. If that works fine and no slamfire, then load the mag with two. If that works fine, then move up to a full mag.

After that -- have fun!

Even if the firing pin is moving back and forth freely, it still can slam fire IF you were using commercial ammos with soft primers i.e., Winchester, Remington, AE, etc. A friend of mine was using a PMC 7.62 x 39 ammo and had a slam fire. I fired lots of UMC and AE ammos, never had a slam fire, but that is because I am lucky. Stay away from commercial ammos, buy Russian or Eastern European ammos. They are cheap and have hard military primers.

You would do well to invest on sighting tool to move the front sight post left and right (for windage adjustment), it is a pain to move the front sight without the tool.

I've been using Wolf 7.62x39 hollow-point. It's maybe a little hotter than other milsurp. It's certainly dirtier - by far. Inaccurate? It shoots as good as most other 7.62x39 at 100 yds. I like it because it's cheaper than most and I don't mind cleaning the gun.

Regards.

Thanks All !!!!
Went to the range this a.m. and this thing is AWESOME!!!
No 'Slam Fire' = Thanks Kaylee !!!
1 round at 25 yds on NRA pistol target = high and a little left.
Good enough so on to 50 yds.
2 rds still high and left. Again thanks Kaylee!!!
Go for it !!!! 5 rounds at 50 yds = 2" goup still high and left.
This is all 'bagged in nice and tight'.
On to 100 yds. - 5 yds. = 3.5" group a little higher but still about the 1.5" same distance left.
Full Mag - 10 rds. gave about the same group.
Did some "Fun Fire" at 50 and 100 yds. and the final test was
200 yds. at a 18" round white steel plate. According to my two observers from 'Pling' noise I hit it 7 out of 10 times. To many holes and dents to tell for sure. Was using Wolf FMJ for all of this.
Plan on ordering a case from him tomorrow even if he's 15 or 20 percent higher than 'ammoman.com' , etc.. Like to support my "local dealer"!!!!
Is this "normal" for these weapons? I'm hooked and will be back to ask for more into on an AK47.

neat! Glad you had fun!

Can't speak to your group.. I was just learning on mine, and not shooting up to that level (and hadn't heard of sandbagging) when I had mine.. but sounds about right from what I've heard. It is a fun little rifle -- glad to hear it's working so well!
