My first SKS

Went to a big gun show (well big for around here anyway) today but didn't see much in my price range. In fact the only thing in my price range were a few beat .22 rifles, beat up Marlin lever actions (at least the ones I was interested in were beat) and a few SKS rifles. Looked at a few of the SKSs and found one the guy was asking $350+ tax. It was a Yugoslavian M59/66 and looked near mint. Picked it up and looked it over and realized all visible serial number were matching, looked down the bore and it was bright and shiny. The wood is really nice with no dings and matching number on the butt stock. Took a look at the leather sling and there's writing on it in what appears to be pencil and definitely isn't English (in fact if any one can decode the writing I'd be interested in what it says) may be a name but I can't make heads or tails of it. Took me about an hour to decide to go back and see what the guy's best deal on the rifle was, I ended up picking it up for $345 tax included so I saved myself about $30. I know I could have picked the rifle up for under $100 15-20 years ago and I'm kicking myself for not buying a crate of them when they were that cheap. I probably over paid a bit today but there weren't many of them there and this was one of the few with all it's parts still on the rifle and the only one at the show with the sling. All the Yugo SKS rifles were in the $300-$350 range and they seemed to be selling pretty quick. From what I've been able to find out on the SKS boards it was built in 1974, seems to be in really good shape for an almost 40 year old rifle. So without further adieu, here she is:

Looks real nice and that's from a guy who don't care for sks's. Minus the bayonet and grenade launcher...id call it real nice looking. You paid a premium for it but got what you wanted. That's money well spent.

I actually think I want to leave it all original. I have no use for either item but since it's such a nice original rifle I'd like to leave it that way I think. I need to pick up so ammo for it and see how it shoots. Maybe Friday I'll get out with it. Ammo pickings were pretty slim at the show today as were reloading supplies, no one had powder or primers, it was kind of a strange gun show.

Nice SKS. I enjoy my Romanian and shoot it much more often than my AK.

And yes, keep that SKS all intact and all original. Parts have a way of getting lost.

Very nice! You did really well. All the SKSs I've seen lately are at least $300 and definitely not matching numbers, "recent" production and in such good shape. You should get your self some 30rd magazines just for ghits and shiggles.

nice find. my norinco works great with silver bear soft points
The local gander mtn has golden bear on sale for $6.50/box. Probably pick up a couple boxes of that for the test fire, hoping to get to the gun club on Friday. I imagine the golden bear ought to work pretty well too.

"pretty is as pretty does"
Get that girl to the range and give us a report!!!

That is a nice looking SKS. Good work.

Nice rifle

I have a Norinco SKS that I enjoy shooting.

Get trigger work done for safety and get the spring loaded FP

Congrats. That is a nice looking SKS.

As far as buying them for under $100 20 years ago, I bought a Russian 1954 Tula for $89. I am still amazed at the current price that the SKS is going for.

Enjoy that new rifle.

(in fact if any one can decode the writing I'd be interested in what it says)

The letters look Cyrillic but it may not be Russian, as Russians only handwrite in cursive. I can't really make out the second part of it, it's kind of faint so if you could take a better pic of it or write it out, I may be able to read it.

Thank you rifleman8, the more I look at it the more it looks like a first and last name. It's on the sling in about 3 different places and part of it looks like Zylo to me. Here's a couple more pictures of it, maybe this will help.

Second picture's a bit fuzzy, too much caffeine I guess.
