My First Handgun!

Well, I got my Ruger Security Six today. It's a '73-74 Model (not sure which one, too lazy to look LOL). It has the shorter 2" barrel and looks awesome except for some wear on the backstrap which could be easily fixed by just about anyone. I shot it at 7 Yards today with some old Federal .38 Special, it's probably not that great for someone who has more experience than me, but my first 5 shots were touching within 7/8" of an inch. I pulled my last one due to the excitement I think, lol. Anyway, just thought I would share a bit. Any advice on grip or anything similar would be appreciated. And if you guys could recommend a good practice load for .38 Special I would really appreciate it. Tips on improvement are also very much appreciated.
Thank you!

Regards,

-Mo.

Congratulations, the "Six" Series DA revolvers (Security, Police Service, Speed) are excellent revolvers. Is yours chambered in .38 Special only or were you simply shooting .38's from a .357 Magnum version (they were also made in 9mm, btw)?

As far as grips go, it will depend on whether your serial number starts with a 150- or 151- prefix. The earlier 150- prefix guns had slightly different grip frames and are much more difficult to find aftermarket stocks for. The changeover was, IIRC, somewhere in the 1974-1975 time period. I've hear that Pachmayr "Gripper" grips can be made to work acceptably on a 150- prefix gun though they still won't fit perfectly. Honestly, if I had a 150- prefix gun I'd probably lean towards just adding a Tyler T-Grip to the stock panels and calling it good.

If the gun is a 151- prefix, however, the world is your oyster as there is a plethora of aftermarket grips available. I personally like Hogues, but it's a matter of personal preference.

Finally, for practice .38's, just about any reasonably priced FMJ or LRN should do fine. For factory ammo, I'm becoming fond of the Perfecta 158 gr FMJ at Walmart because it's as affordable as anything, doesn't lead up my barrels like some lead bullets do (though a good cleaning takes care of it anyway), and have snappier recoil which closely approximates that of my +P carry ammo. Of course the most cost effective way to practice with a .38 is to handload. I've found 4 gr of Unique under a good hardcast 158 gr LSWC with a standard small pistol primer to be a fine accurate load which is easy on both the gun and shooter.

Awesome, great shooting.

I like 158 grain fmj for practice, brand doesn't matter too much to me (although I shoot handloads almost exclusively nowadays). I like jacketed to avoid leading and I like the 158 gr weight because they shoot point of impact in my guns. I believe they usually design revolvers sights to shoot 158 at point of aim.

Best advice I can give is shoot tons of different ammo and stock up on what YOU like best!

I also think a snub 38 is an excellent first pistol because they are difficult to shoot well. Master the snub and you will find proficiency in other handguns quite easily.

Congrats on your 1st handgun. I like those Security Sixes and have had a couple myself. Sold the longer one and kept the short one.

wow, good job man, awesome wonderful pistol. good practice load??? the one you make yourself......honestly, that's the best answer. 38spl s the EASIEST, most FUN, most VERSATILE and second only to 9mm as the CHEAPEST round to reload for. you can slap a DEWC flush in a case with as little as grain of powder and shoot cans with the authority of a cork-gun or load 95gr cast poppers that will punch 3" into a tree but have recoil your little sister couldn't complain about. you get the dies, primers and the ONE POUND OF HP38 THAT'LL LAST YOU TWO YEARS, and i'll send you cases and bullets of all sorts of flavors.

casting my own 38 and using my acquired cases, it costs 3-5c a round depending on what you paid for primers. I have so many 358 bullets laying around, you welcome to them, powder-coated and all.

outside of that, try these http://www.georgia-arms.com/38-special-158gr-lead-round-nose-flat-pt/ hurry up, almost out of stock and free shipping for the holidays.
