My First FAL!!!

I recently had a FA-91 on lay-away at my local gunshop.
Well, I walked in there today and what do my eyes behold? An IMBEL STG58 on consignment for $499. It looked much nicer than the FA-91 and was in much better shape and a hundred and fifty dollars less. Best of all, it was a FAL :D.
Needless to say, I had them take the money I origionally had on the H&K clone and put it towards the FAL and walked home with a new FAL and a huge smile on my face. I can hardly wait to try it out :D :D

Swatman hows your FAL holding up?
I know this is an old post but I'm checking on the people that didn't spend $1400 on there FALs.

At that price, it's probably a Century International Arms kit gun. The consensus on FAL Files is that these are hit-or-miss propositions.

I'd pay for a headspace check by a professional gunsmith (extractor removal required, special tool recommended). If the headspace is good, and it cycles reliably with NATO milsurp, congratulate yourself on acquiring a good shooter at a reasonable price.

You might also spend some time on FAL Files learning about U.S. parts count, and make sure you have the required number. It's a totally bogus law, but something you might want to comply with. I recommend having enough so that you don't require any U.S.-made magazine (floorplate and follower) parts. Then you can take advantage of all the cheap FAL full capacity magazines that are readily available for $10 and less.

Ah - just realized after posting that this was a follow up on an old post. Oh, well, my comments above still stand.

I just got my new FAL this weekend, sounds similar to yours, a STG 58, Century Imbel receiver, probably a CAI assembly. It was unfired (as evidenced by the gas pistion), the barrel and internals of the receiver are like new, new stock and pistol grip (Century's though). Got to go to the range yesterday and blast away, I'm hooked. Supprisingly accurate for a battle rifle with iron sights (2-3" @ 100 yards), too bad my eyes aren't better. Will be looking for a scope soon, thinking about a red dot. Paid $600 at a show.

JimR, while Century is selling theirs at this price, others are as well. My Entreprise receivered STG-58 went for $550 when I bought it. It had excellent quality parts and shoots great. Granted, the finish was awful. I wound up spending another $130 for refinishing, but now I have a great looking and shooting rifle. Swatman, welcome to the club! There IS a good posssibility that you do have a Century...does it say that on the right side of the receiver? If so, check the gas piston, and see if it's a one-piece or two-piece...if two-piece, try to swap it out with a one-piece soon. Also check the headspace, as JimR said.

When you shoot it, set the gas system to 7, put one round in the mag, insert the mag, charge the rifle, and fire. If the bolt did not stay to the rear (probably didn't) repeat with the gas system at 6. Keep doing this 'till it stays open reliably. That way your rifle is operating with the least amount of abuse.

DZ do you know the guys at that Shop? I'm from Easter PA and I'm trying to sell or trade in my Russian SKS towards an FAL. I'd drive there if I new they'd consider it. I'd rather look over and FAL than pray for a good one by ordering it online.

Dan's is on the Pittsburgh side of the State

I haven't been there yet, but it is near the in-laws

Before I would spend the 750 on the M444, I would spend 795 for a DSA Kit rifle. Much better rifle with a lifetime limited warranty. All of the proper "legal" parts and put together right....They are exceptional shooters. I haven't heard of anyone who is not extremely happy with this guns.
