My first build....

I have been wanting a long range rifle [600-1000 yds] for punching paper for some time but I thought the cost was prohibitive. Well, maybe not.

My best friend just gave me a stock for a Rem 700 short action, Choate "The Ultimate Sniper" [yeah, I know- it's kinda cheap looking & heavy but looks like it will do the job]. Will be shooting from a bench.

He will also sell me a 700 short action from a .308 rifle he has [very reasonable].

So, I know I need a barrel and maybe a trigger. Need suggestions. Caliber .260 Remington.

Any advice will be appreciated.

The .260 Rem or 6.5-08 is a good long range round with a high ballistic coefficient and good sectional density. Terry Cross of KMW built a nice .260 a few years back.

The stock you have is, ah... well, it wouldn't be my first choice. But once you get the gun built, you can always change that.

Several trigger makers to choose from... I'm partial to Jewell.

A whole bunch of barrel makers... I'm partial to Krieger, Lilja and PacNor.

Gunsmiths... even bigger selection there. Benchrest rifle builders are your best choice.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of responses on this. Do your "due diligence" and have fun with it.

Choate Stock

Don't underestimate that stock.
Ugly? Yep
Heavy? Yep

But look at that nice big bedding block.
Look at those nice fat pillars.
Look at all that room for the barrel.
Look at that nice forearm slant for the bags.

I love mine and it is perfect for the bench.
