My first 1000 yard match !

WOW! That's a LOOOOONG way!

I shot "F" class with my newly (couple of months ago) acquired Remington 700 PSS/.308/Leupold Tactical Mil-Dot 3.5x10 (no parallax adjustment). Had to fight 1 to 1.5 minutes of mirage...another 1 to 1.5 minutes of parallax, a light variable wind and 90 degree heat :( . Managed a 181/2X out of a possible 200 for 20 shots in 30 minutes - including unlimited sighters before shooting for record as long as it was all done in the 30 minute period.

I think I'll try that again! First time I've shot it past 200 yards - long range is a HOOT :D

The match was held at the Arnold Air Force Base Rifle Range in Tullahoma, Tennessee (my home town). They host several High Power matches each year including the TN State Championships and several Military matches. The Arnold site has a pop-up rifle range, pop-up pistol range, several multi-purpose ranges and a KD range that starts at 100 yards and goes to 1000 yards.

I don't know how most 1000 yard matches are done, since this was my first, but I got the impression it was done per NRA rules and divided in NRA classes. Being an IDPA pistol competitor for the past five years has not prepared me well for this type of competition but some of my past varmint hunting experience managed to resurface.

I was using Federal Gold Medal Match .308 in 175 grain. My overall group was about 3 MOA for 20 shots. That included a couple of lateral flyers that were 9's at 8 o'clock and 3 o'clock (shooter induced error). Without those two shots, the lateral spread was about 1.5 MOA. My biggest problem was the vertical spread caused either by barrel heating or atmospheric changes (or both). My first three shots for record were 10's and then a 9, 8 and 7, all climbing up the target in succession. Being new to that rifle and shooting at that distance, I failed to adjust my elevation in time to save my score. Then I over compensated and hit a low 8 before getting back toward center. All in all a great learning experience. I believe I'll do better next time. The rifle I used is pictured below

I also want to shoot High Power with these guys. I've got my AR built but haven't found time to get out and shoot it across the course. All I have so far is a 200 and 300 yard zero. They also held a 4 gun tactical match that was a real blast.

If you're really going to get into it hardcore, look into a .300 win mag ;) and pick up a copy of Precision Shooting Magazine. That magazine is absolutely amazing if you're into 1000 yard shoots.

Sometime this year, I'm going to have a 6ppc built. Right now, I'm debating on which action I want to go with.

_YoYo_,

They will have another one in September. Your profile doesn't indicate what part of the world you are near.

ArmySon,

The rifle is set up for SWAT/SRT Sniper/Observer and Tactical use. The 1000 yard stuff is just for fun. I would have to change scopes (at least) for any serious competition at that distance. I was trying to see what the limitations of this particular rig would be under field conditions at that distance - it is LIMITED!

The guy who won the match - with a 195 - was shooting a full blown custom set-up in 6mmBR. Second place - with a 194 - was another bull barreled custom job in 300 mag. I believe they were both 40X actions.

1000 Yard shooting is pretty darn fun.

MY first thousand yard match in Cuyama, PRK was a lot of fun. I shot a 385-10x out of 400 (40 round match) with my stock Rem 700 VS and a Leupold 6.5-20 LRT inthe F Class (I was using a Harris Model L(s) bipod). I ran out of elevation and had to hold over! I have a IOR 20 MOA tapered base on the rifle now and I can't wait to head out again.

Son, e-mail me at bogieppc@mindspring.com - I can recommend any of several actions, and a couple of very excellent benchrest gunsmiths. DO NOT buy an action, and give it to the fellow who mostly works on deer rifles... You'll only get the FULL potential out of a real BR smith...

Mikey, I live in the Chattanooga area and would like at least watch a match there if not shoot at one. Can you give some information on the shoots. Is there a contact person that you know of? Thanks.
