My Favorite .44 Special Snub load is...

PMC 240 grain SWC Copper plated! I'm not sure how fast it's going out of my 2" Taurus 445, but it sure packs a wallop. I shot a few old cans of corn and they were pretty much smashed to bits. I personally do not think that any load will expand from these short barelled guns, so I'm going for bullet weight. Big bore bullets already come pre-expanded :) ;)

What do you folks like?

Canis, I have a 445 too. I have been
reading that it is best to stay at
200grains or less to keep the cylinder
from locking up. Have fun shooting!

Tony,

Where did you read this? I have shot several hundred rounds of the 240 grain load through mine and have not had any trouble.

Thanks,

I LOAD THE NOSLER 210 GRAIN SEMIJACKETED HOLLOWPOINT. THIS GIVES YOU PERFORMANCE MIDWAY BETWEEN THE 230 GRAIN AND THE 165/180 GRAIN BULLETS. PLUS THERE IS ENOUGH EXPOSED LEAD THAT ALLOWS THE BULLET TO BRAD OR MUSHROOM OVER IF IT CAN. P.S THIS BULLET IS EXCELLENT FOR DEER OUT OF A 6" .44 MAGGY ALSO.

Seems like we are running the gamut from light and somewhat faster to heavy and slow and even a mid weight load or two.

S&W44, what kind of velocity are you getting out of your load? Sounds like a real sledgehammer!

I just bought one yesterday! Blued/Hammerless NIB for $230. The only .44Sp I could find at the gun show was a brand called 3D-Blue...200gr semiwadcutter, so I bought one box of 50 to try out. I just ordered some Proload 200gr HP from Ammoman.

I'll range-test this flamethrower Tuesday.

I've had very good results from the Cor-Bon 165 gr. Very accurate and very controllable in my 629 snubby.

[/quote]Near as I can calculate,it's between 900 and 1000 fps out of that 2 inch barrel, hard on the gun and your hand.Even with rubber grips,20 or 30 rounds is all you want to shoot in one session.

I have Taurus's earlier Model 431 which has a 3" barrel. I use the CCI 200gr Golden Saber. I chronographed a few loads and found this one was the fastest at about 875fps in my barrel. The 200gr Winchester Silvertip did a pathetic 725fps of so. I also don't expect expansion at very subsonic speeds, but the Golden Saber has a very wide hollowpoint and if anything will expand, it should. I'd prefer this bullet loaded in brass cases rather than the alauminum Blazer case but it is reliable so... I'd also prefer a heavier bullet but with fixed sights you're somewhat at the mercy of your gun. <G> --Mark
