Well, today was the first day I took my family to the range for a shooting session. It took awhile before it actually happened because my wife doesn't really like guns
(she puts up with them for self defense, at best).
I was nervous and tried not to expect to much. But I'm happy to report fun was had by all.
I started the children (8 yr old girl and 5 yr old boy) on a Remington 597 at the 40 yrd 'tin can' range. After a few rounds both children were hitting 7 up bottles and soda cans! Pretty impressive for the first time out and I was sure to give them plenty of praise. My wife then took a try with the 597 and after she adjusted her hold a little she was hitting as well (she commented, 'this is pretty fun', I was happy).
The kids got a big kick out of seeing me bounce 7 up bottles into the air with my 45-70 Marlin Guide gun.
We then moved over to the pistol range and I started my wife out on a 686+, 3" barrel with .38 special wadcutters. She had some trouble handling the DA trugger pull, so I had her fire SA. At 7 yards she was hitting the x and 8 and 9's. SHe was happy and I was happy! I had her try a Ruger P89 but the DA pull and kick was alittle bit to much.
She likes the little 686+.
I let the kids fire the Ruger MkII bull barrel and my daughter especially loved it. She must of burned off 100+ rounds!
She even tried the 686+ with .38's.
I got to shoot my new G30 as well, at 7 yds placed them all on the x, love that gun!
I'm hoping this will be a family tradition. I'm happy my wife really enjoyed it and now has a better understanding of guns and how they work.
I think I'll go out tomorrow and look at a Ruger Bearcat for the kids for our next outing.
Hopefully this will be a start of a new generation of pro-gunners
(she puts up with them for self defense, at best).
