My cylinder stopped rotating

I installed a Hogue Monogrip on my model 13 today. When I went to dry fire it, to see how it felt, I noticed the cylinder wouldn't rotate. The extractor is screwed in tightly. The mainspring appears to be ok. Any thoughts?

Does it work with the grip off? If it does, the mainspring is probably binding on the grip. Sounds like something is binding under your grip since it happened after you changed it.

Nope, it doesn't ork with the grip off. I had to install the stock pin as well, so the stirrup could be attached. Perhaps tapping that in did something somewhere?

If I hold the gun, muzzle away from, and cock the hammer, the part below the firing pin and to the right doesn't appear to be protruding far enough. No clue if that's it or how to fix it either.

Thats called the hand and it rotates the cylinder. As you say, if it does not protrude enough the cylinder won"t rotate. Something must have moved out of position if I were you, I would take the sideplate off and look at the position of the innards. You can even work the mechanism by holding the cylinder release just hold the innards in place.. I am sure you can see your problem.

If you are going to take the sideplate off, DO NOT PRY IT OFF!

More good wheelguns are ruined by this than anything else. Take it to a gunsmith if you don't know what you are doing.

Use right sized screwdrivers to remove the sideplate screws and a non marring hammer or screwdriver handle to rap on the grip frame until the sideplate falls off. Mind the hammer block that will fall out also.

Odd that your hand jumped the groove it rides in but check it.

Biker,
I did just that this afternoon. Gander Mtn. gunsmith. I actually had to take a Colt Python in to have the cylinder latch replaced. They told me it would take 8 weeks to get to it. Sheesh, I thought that at least the Python would be a quick fix that the ycould knock out while I waited. Such is life...

parrothead2581 - If you want a good gunsmith, with less of a wait, try Brian over at Greensboro gunworks. He's very good, not so fast, but alot faster than six weeks for a cylinder release! He charges fairly too, and guarantees his work. I let him work on my off duty and duty guns, I've not regretted it. Hope this helps. Regards 18DAI.

Thanks 18DAI,
I think I'll do that. I'm going to hate not having that Python for 2 months. Do you happen to know GGWs operating hours? I'll try to take them over there first thing Monday or Tuesday.

Tuesday thru Saturday, 11AM till 6PM. You may want to call to make sure he will work on a Python, for some reason I thought you wanted the S&W worked on. If he declines, Larry Crump might repair the Python. Call Calibers to get Mr Crumps contact info. Good luck. Regards 18DAI.

Monogrip fit.

Dear Parrothead, try to put the old grip back and then study the mono grip fit carefully before you install it.:( PS if you took sideplate off take it to a Gunsmith..:)
