Let me begin by stating that I am not a gunsmith and never have made claim as such.
My right hand … my Colt Peacemaker, second gen, had a little glitch, the bolt spring broke. I called a well-known Peacemaker specialist who gave me guidance in replacing it so I ordered one and put it in. Then I had something else go wrong, my middle hammer notch didn’t hold and I couldn’t load or unload without manually holding the position of the cylinder by hand. The notch was broken. After a few phone calls to a couple of well known single action guys the cost was going to start at $160.00 for two way FedEx overnight shipping for handguns. Then I had to find a second gen hammer, which is not very easy to find or cheap to buy-they don’t make them anymore and have not for years. I eventually over time bought two on EBay.
I decided to try a local gunsmith and took my Colt to him. He called me today with the news … it wasn’t what I thought the problem was! When I installed the bolt spring I was unaware of anything other than a straight install … apparently when he looked at it he noticed it looked too long … he trimmed the spring down to size and found my hammer was NOT broken, the timing is great and it works like a champ again! I now have two extra second gen hammers to boot!
As I previously stated, I am not a gunsmith and happy to know my trusty Colt is back in action and was not broken as previously diagnosed by me. I love my Colt and on this night will give it a name … ‘Doc’
