My Christmas Present: A S&W 625

My wife, bless her, had me go out and buy a model 625-8 .45 ACP for my Christmas present. She's not into shooting, but she encourages my hobby.

I picked up this new revolver for $549, the best price I've come across in the gun shops in the Denver area. Most are priced above $600 new.

Of course there had to be a catch. The moon clips in the box are 8-shot (.357 mag?). I e-mailed S&W Customer Support about this, and they replied today that the correct replacement clips will be shipped. I also ordered some extra moon clips off the S&W web site, but got an e-mail saying they're currently out of stock. So I ordered some moon clips (AND a little case extractor tool for $3.25...may as well get my money's worth for the shipping) from Wilson Combat and they've already been shipped Fed Ex.

One advantage of a revolver over a semi-auto: the cleaning process is simpler and quicker.

No big news, here, ladies and gentlemen, but I thought I'd just share my little bit of happiness with some who can understand my joy.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year to All.

I am a little anal about cleaning my guns and clean them pretty meticulously after everytime I shoot.

In my experience, I can breakdown and clean my Dan Wesson 1911 in 15 minutes whereas it takes me at least 30 min per revolver. There are just corners that are hard to on a revolver.

That sounds like S&W alright. I don't think much of S&W QC lately. I don't buy Wilson due to QC problems also. I would like to buy a 325 from S&W. Their QC is keeping me from buying though. Your example of S&W final QC is not atypical. Enjoy that 625 and buy RIMZ, you won't be sorry.

Very nice! Youll enjoy it alot. I had one a few years back...traded it for a 1911....been kickin myself ever since! :D

Welcome to the Forum, and congrats on the new gun!!

My wife also "enabled" my habit, when she bought me this 625 for my birthday a few years ago.

Don't be too concerned about the wrong clips. The 8 rounder .357s are worth almost 3 times as much as the 6 round .45s. You should have no problems selling them.

You may want to also get familiar with www.moonclips.com , especially the RIMZ.

Let us know how it shoots...

Joe,

Thanks for the tip about www.moonclips.com and the TK Custom website. Are the RIMZ polymer plastic full moonclips easier to deal with? Anybody use the clip stripper tools or demooner tools?

The RIMZ clips don't need any tools. Easy in and out with just your fingers. They do hold the rounds less securely than the steel clips, but they are fine for range use. For any use where a round popping out would be a very bad thing, I use steel. I've got one of the California Comp "pliers" demooners. It works great.

From my limited experience, I've found that needle nosed pliers work fine for removing spent cartridges from steel clips. I use a Leatherman.

I'm ordering some RIMZ but have also found that steel clips are pretty easy to load once they're broken in.

Lastly as others have said elsewhere, the 625 can be shot w/o the clips.
