My 870 30" full choke question?

Way back in about 1959 I bought a new Remington Wingmaster 870 shotgun. I think it was about $59, brand new.

Just last week I ran across a part that came with the gun that I have never used and wonder what it is for.

The 870 came with a wood plug to limit the gun to three shots. But Remington also included a steel (I think) plug for the same purpose. It is, of course much heavier.

Why would I want to use the heavier plug? What for??

Way back the steel plug was included for people who wanted more weight. They also made a steel plug for the hole in the stock, and a VERY rare matched set of wood and steel 3 part plugs so you could tailor the weight just like you wanted to.
