My 8 1/2 year old shot my Garand today...

I took my boy to the range with me today. I belong to West End Gun Club in Southern California. It is the best $120/year you could ever spend. Complete access 24/7 and nice facilities.

I started him shooting a Marlin YN15 bolt action .22 a year ago. He loves it. We shoot soda pop cans and other target that give a reaction to being hit. Canned chilli flies about 5' in the air when you hit it just right with a .22. Must be the steel can and pressure build up. Lately, he has been shooting my 1894P with .44 mag rounds. Today, I let him shoot the Garand off the bench (it is too heavy to hold). He loved it!! Hit 12" steel at 100 yards. Man, he sure was happy.

I think every boy should have this type of experience. He is a straight A student and very responsible. Of course, I am going to get him back on the .22 bolt action real soon so he does not develop a serious flinch.

Life does not get any better than this.

:)

What fun!

Now I have to get a Garand for my boy to try. He's 7.5 yrs and has been lovin' my old Marlin Mdl 60, shootin' pop bottles at 50 yrds (open sights o' course).

Step #2 is to keep all those guns around. My dad is still with us so I buy guns from him rather sitting around being an inheritance vulture. I fired my first 1911 when I was seven, today I carry that gun on occasion. You can get new guns, just not new memories.

I remember a bumper sticker which said, "If you hunt with your son, you won't have to hunt for your son."

My son began with a BB gun around age six-ish. He never developed any particular great interest in guns, although his skills were high, and he has killed a deer.

When he went into the USAF, back in '81, he qualified expert with the M16. He was home on a visit at Thanksgiving; we did some pistol shooting; he's still quite competent. His wife ain't too shabby, either...

Good on ya, Dave!

Sounds like a good time. Shooting with my dad is certainly something I'll always cherish.

Where's the West End Gun Club? I've been looking for a private club in So. Cal.

I went out yesterday with my usual Sunday group. One guy brought his two grandchildren 11 and 12 years old that were spending a week of Christmas vacation with him. He brought his Remington Nylon 66 and his S&W Model 17 for them to shoot. Before they left they ended up shooting my truck gun-the venerable Hi-Point 9mm Carbine and my Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Carbine. Then they shot another guys Ruger Redhawk in .45 Colt and his Ruger Security Six in .357. Followed by another guys 1911 and a S&W Model 36. A good time was had by all, and hopefully we furthered the education of the kids. One guy had one of those spinner targets set up at about 10 yards and the kids were scoring hits on it with all the centerfire handguns.
