I took my 32 H&R Cowboy rifle out yesterday only to have it jam on me...... again! I hadn't shot it in over a year and I was itching to take it out again. I've learned not to shoot anything but H&R ammo but unfortunately I worked the lever slowly to catch my brass and JAAAAAMMMMMMMM, it locked up tight. I buggered the lever screw beyond repair getting it out. Thankfully it's a cheap part to replace. I've never had any problems with my 357 Marlin. I was wondering how many of these now discontinued H&R models were made and how many people are still shooting them on a regular basis? I was reading about the "marlin jam" and I think it's happening with this rifle. A second round seems to jam beween the frame/opening of the mag and the carrier jamming the works. Unfortunatelly without the loading port you can't really push the stuck round that gets caught between the elevator/carrier back into the magazine. The jam causes the lever screw to bind tight making fixing it a bugger without stripping the screw head! I don't know if chamfering the cam on the lever will help but I'm thinking that the lever and carrier tip need to be mirror polished and the mag tube opening chamfered slightly. It seems that if the parts had a little chamfer, the elevator would be able to slip the rim back into the magazine tube as the carrier elevates rather than sticking and just jamming up the works. If you have one of these, have you been able to work out the jamming issues? What did you do? This gun is really accurate and I want to use it more........ I didn't buy it to be a safe queen.

If all else fails, it may be the dimensions of the case and some cockeyed geometry problem that could be fixed by rechambering to a longer cartridge.

Are the federal or the 32-20 able to work in that rifle if rechambered?

Not sure but I know I want to keep it in the same family of 32 S&W cartridges. I tried a 327 case in the chamber and it's very close to closing................. but the action port is too short for the longer round to drop in. The gun will run fine and then all of a sudden just jam up tight. I've learned that if it jams it's better not to force anything and just drop the lever before binding the lever screw tight:mad:

I just wanted to post that I was able to fix my action after doing some reading and studying my problem. I needed to throat the carrier like a 45 feed ramp because it was causing the rim of the cartridge behind to block the carrier from coming up causing my jamming problem. With a radius and taper to the tip of the carrier it now can cam that next round back into the magazine and my gun no longer jams.
