My $15 "Truck Gun"

I may as well tell you guys, I don't currently own a truck. I drive an accord but even so, I still like to always have a long gun in the trunk. Not so much for a self defense situation/SHTF but animals I encounter on the property/driveway coming to and from work/"the city".

I always see a possum, snake, squirrel, crow, pest etc and 95% of the time I don't have a long gun with me. Just whatever CC pistol I may have on me that day. Ask me how hard it is to hit a crow at 40 yards with a little P3AT... HARD!

Back to the main point. I picked up two single shot H&R 12 gauge shotguns for $51 and $53 the other day.

Here's them before:

The $51 was the one I chose to use for this project. I had a "Survivor" H&R buttstock and forearm in the parts box so I figured it would be great for this. I used a hacksaw to cut the factory 28" Mod choke barrel down to 19" then evened it up with a file to make it look nice. I also had the hammer extension and shotshell holder in the parts box so those were "free" also. Sold the stock set locally for $40. hence my $15 "Truck Gun"

I'm debating what to do with the other H&R...Suggestions?

I plan to drill and tap the barrel for a bead at some point in the near future and also either duracoat or just use some flat black Rustoleum on the receiver/barrel for rust resistance.

Don't think it turned out bad with about 20 minutes of work and another hour with the tapping/painting ahead. Best part is, If for some reason it does get stolen(Hopefully not!), I'm out $15. That's basically two days lunch cost.

What do you guys use for your all around Truck/Property/all around long guns?

Not what I would have done, but a nice project.

Those H&R/NEF singles are great for projects. Low initial cost, lots of aftermarket stuff and a reliable, sturdy platform.

I would have left the barrel alone, Mod is a good all around choke and I've no problems manuevering a 28" barrel break action shotgun.

Good pad, sling studs and a flat black paint job on the lumber, or homemade camo. I'd pattern with a good field load and also buck, check POI with slugs and be ready for anything short of a horde of Accord eating undead....

Nice little conversion you produced there! :) If only they were to come from that factory that way, perhaps 20" barred and choked modified. ;)

Are those critters packing? I moved from the city to the sticks and dont feel a need to kill the pest in my yard. I dont farm, or have livestock. I would kill skunks, but they started it by spraying my dog. Maybe armadillos (they make my yard look like swiss cheese) but i let my dog chase them out of the yard. Racoons and opposums dont really bother me. My dog killed a racoon, yuck.
I do carry my mossberg 590, with a g2(LED) surefire light, and side saddle loaded with PDX1 12ga ammo just it in case i get attacked by bigfoot/ a criminal in my yard when i go out for a cigg. I have one birdshot in my 38spl for snakes, and 4 critical defense for intruders. Also got a westerfield loaded with federal 00buck 8shot, im thinking about putting that in my truck, i just dont want it to get stolen. You can probably find a cheap .22lr to have as a truck gun, pretty good round for your pests.
Sorry if i sound like a tree hugger, im not. I just respect all forms of life. Hey if those pest are destroying your property you gotta do what you gotta do.

P.S If i ever catch that mole digging burrows in my yard, its not gonna be pretty for him, I PROMISE!

I like it. I kept a similar camp gun for a number of years.

I have a 22" mod choked 12ga with peep sights soldered to it.

It wears synthetic stocks and uses the thumb screw from a survivor forend so I don't need any tools to break it down or put it together.

It's a handy little gun, but thumps a good deal when I shoot it.

I have 3 of them set up almost exactly like yours to carry in the trucks around my place. They work fine for anything close range. Effective, but inexpensive.

Put a pistol grip/folding stock on the other one. (or swap this stock to the other one, and pistolgip/folder on the one you just chopped for the car). I keep a .22lr with a folder in the truck and, since the accident, you wont find me without my G21 somewhere on me. I also have a "Hey Boy!" in .22mag wheel gun in my pocket. Paranoid? Maybe, but I am no longer physically able to get someone off me without help. And why .22lr & .22mag? Cause I know how to shoot them.LOL

As to paint, I am looking into that now. Not sure what type of paint to use, and if I need to put a overcoat after the color on to make it last.

I have one with a very similar stock and 18" barrel.
Those stocks actually handle very well.

That was the whole purpose of me.getting it. Its not pretty but very "handi" so to speak

Sweet. I can't imagine a better way to spend $15.

Thanks, my thoughts exactly!

Tacticool single shot... to each his own.

I never referenced tactical in my post to my knowledge but I dont think just because it has a black stock qualifies it as that. Now put a laser, PG and light and your set

$90 in a yard sale, about $40 for sights, hacksaw blade and a fresh set of Wolff springs and its good to go for another 100 years

We should tend to ask "why the hell not" than "why" here. This is good stuff. I too would not have done that, but, can't argue it isn't useful there. Sure, some choke would be nice. And I can't abide those slippy slidey shell socks since I was a teenager after a coupla field excursions. But something's better than nothing and in this case it was a rewarding project on the relative cheap.

Hey, know what, THIS could be an application for a few of those new Fed. #1 Buck Low Recoil Flite Control shells with a coupla #4 shotshells! I can't believe I'm actually recommending them...

:o

Get a cheap sling for this (its begging for one - lol) and leave the other gun alone for heaven's sake!

I used to carry an old H&R Topper in 16ga. Cut the barrel down to 18 1/4in and cut the stock so OAL was just over 26 1/2in. Fitted an old Ithaca Ray-Bar front sight , a set of sling swivels , along with the elastic shell holder on the butt.

Then I found out it was ILLEGAL in PA to carry a long gun in a vehicle in such a manner , even though I had a license to carry a firearm. Even with shells on the stock , it is considered LOADED. Has something to do with game and poaching laws.

Cali law was applied such that a gun was deemed loaded if shells were in a sidesaddle. Then People v Davis held that it was not a loaded gun.

How does a shorter barrel and a cheesy plastic pistol grip stock improve your chance of hitting the critters?

It looks to me like you found a cheap shotgun perfect for what you had in mind, and then set to work making it as useless as possible for your stated purpose.
