Muzzle Flash from 2 1/4 barrel?

Hey guys, im curious as to what sorta muzzle flash is to be expected from an sp101 with 2.25 barrel? And I assume the .357 throws more flash then a .38 or am I wrong, Also what causes the muzzle flash is it the powder burning and if so, would the Speer Gold dots for short barrel guns produce less muzzle flash since I have heard that it has a faster burning powder...I guess I could shoot it at night and answer these questions myself but doubt the neighbors would approve :D

Flash from a short barrel can be considerable, regardless of the caliber.
But - yes, the .357 will generally have more than the .38.
There are some exceptions. A low flash .357 load may flash less than a +P .38spl load.

Yes - the flash is powder burning outside of either the chamber or the barrel.

Most of the time, slower burning powders will exhibit more flash than faster rated powders.

The "wild card" w/revolvers is the cylinder gap. What you percieve as a shooter to be muzzle flash also includes a considerable amount of flash from the cylinder gap.

Re: Speer Gold Dots.
Personally, I prefer Remington Golden Sabers in either 125 or 158 gr. They seem just a wee bit more tailored to snubbies.

Many factory loads for the .357mag now have flash retardants added to the powder to reduce this well known problem.

Thanks for answering this Newbies questions, I'll eventually do some shooting at night later this fall, I was just curious because when I picked my Sp101 up from the FFL, a guy there was telling me to expect major muzzle flash and be careful not to be blinded  he said it quite similiar to a a welding flash which I remember from High school seeing spots for awhile from welding class :D

Blink and its gone.

If you can see the muzzle flash when the gun fires, you are doing good.

Most people have an involuntary blink when a .357 goes off, both from the noise, and the recoil.

Maybe that's a good thing. I always tried to keep my eyes open through the shot, but the question about muzzle flash might change my mind.
I blink more often than not on the .357, but keep my eyes open on the 9mm.
As long as you know where the sights were when the shot went off, I guess it's a mute point whether you blink or not.

The range I fire my 2 inch sp at is kinda dark. I only shoot .357 mags usually 147 gr fiottchi's, PMC and hydroshoks. the muzzle blast is apparent but not excessive. I seldom notice it over the reciol and pain in my hand after firing. (unless I remeber to bring that kickass smith and wesson right hand shooting glove). I can see that the hydroshoks have a distinct seemingly diamond shape blast above the barrel that I notice rather than a more straight flame like blast.
