Muzzle brake won’t fit snug to barrel

I’m restoring a Norinco NHM-91.

I replaced the missing muzzle brake detent and spring.

I have slant (47) and 74 style brakes.

No matter where I start screwing the brakes on, there is a gap between the brake and barrel (I have to back the brake off to engage the detent).

There do seem to be fixed places where the starting threads engage each other preventing a closer final fit.

Is this normal?

How do I minimize the brake-barrel gap?

1. It's normal.
2. You can remove small amounts of metal
from the muzzle brake, until it fits flush.
