muzzl brake

Is there a muzzle brake that works as well as a machined barrel, or threaded barrel with a screw on device, that would be a bolt on product for a 308 700 varmint? I see smith prices from $150 to $500 for a machined barrel solution. I think a machined barrel looks better than other options. Lots of available options after the barrel is threaded. I would like to NOT be at the mercy of a smith while my rifle sits in line at their shop, and have a modified rifle when I get my rifle back.

If I'm understanding you right you want a clamp on muzzle brake? If so there are a number of them out there, just google "clamp on muzzle brake" and take you pick.

It could work as well as any design, but it's going to change the barrel harmonics

The good thing about that is you can try different mounting positions and may be able to find a "sweet spot" that increases accuracy, similar to the Browning "Boss" system

It will never look as good as a screw on or ported barrel

Your smith is just trying to give you the best results with a minimum of legwork and frustration. Yes, there are clamp-on brakes, but they do not generally work as well as a good muzzle brake that has been threaded on. Brakes are not cheap, but neither is the machinery and the skill you need to do the job right.

Thanks for the responses. I want to avoid parting with my rifle for weeks. I am not sure I can follow through with it. It's kind of like getting my dog neutered. I see some posters claim that they can see their hits shooting a 308 without a brake. Is that just a fish story?

Some make lots of claims

There are too many variables to give a good answer without more details such as the exact load, the distance, and the weight of the gun

They might be talking about seeing impacts on game, or hitting the ground, but I doubt they are seeing it on paper targets while looking through the scope

I have a screwed on muzzle brake that I got from Bruce McArthur, took 6 months cost me $275 for the brake & $100. to install, the brake works great. A range friend ordered a 3 screw clamp on brake for $100. took 3 weeks to get looks & workes just as good as mine from Wittmachine check them out. Great company to deal with. The next brake I ordere will be from them. Hope I helped in some way. Chris
