Barkeep shoots, injures 2 attackers
ACE ATKINS of The Tampa Tribune
For Louis Place, it had been a pretty good night tending bar at the Empire in Ybor City. A DJ had played techno and hip hop music as patrons filled his tip jar with $137 for serving beer and kamikazes.
Place left at 3:45 a.m. Friday, carrying his earnings in a large plastic cup, hoping to get home to sleep.
Just as he was about to get in his truck and head to Temple Terrace, the lanky, soft-spoken, 25-year-old met four men in a red Mustang.
``Show me the money,'' he said one of the men told him.
Place, who had a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson tucked in the waistband of his baggy jeans, refused.
Three of the men climbed out of the Mustang.
They attacked Place, kicking and punching him, according to police. He fell to the asphalt by his truck and covered his face. As his arms and legs began to bleed, Place said he didn't want to use his gun.
His only shooting experience came from trips to the gun range with a buddy or hunting wild hogs with his father.
Then Place heard one of the men order another one to grab the weapon.
Place pulled out the Smith & Wesson and shot one man in the leg. He fired again from his knees. This time, he said, he heard one of his attackers yelp and saw him grab his buttocks. ``He shot me, man,'' the man cried.
As the men piled back into their Mustang, Place ran to the nearby Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. He jumped behind a row of bushes with the gun still in his hands, his heart and breath racing.
He was sure they'd be coming for him.
Instead, a few witnesses approached to see if he was all right. Place walked away from the bushes toward a deputy. He threw the gun to the side and dropped to his knees.
``I wanted him to know I was in full and total cooperation,'' Place said Friday as he ran his hands through his short hair.
A witness had noticed the Mustang and its tag number. Minutes later, paramedics were called to 22nd Street and Hillsborough Avenue.
Police charged four men there with strong- arm robbery: Joshua Adam Dow, 21, Jeremy Lee Mixon, 24, Ryan Joel Mixon, 20, and W. Lee Hill, 22.
Dow was shot in the leg, police said. He was treated and released into police custody. Mixon was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.
None of the men was armed, said Capt. John Garcia, head of Tampa police's major crime bureau.
The Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office will review the shooting, but no charges had been filed against Place on Friday. Although he did not have a concealed weapon permit, the bartender was not breaking the law by carrying the gun from work to his truck, police said.
Place said he understands the dangers of late nights in Ybor City but ``thought this happens to somebody else, anybody else.''
Occasionally, co-workers have asked Place why he carried a gun.
``I told them I hoped I never had to shoot anyone,'' he said, ``but I knew it was them or me.''
