"Must Buy" Price for a S&W 5906?

Theres a 5906 (4" barrel, all stainless, double stack, 3rd gen S&W) available for sale locally for $350. I dont need it but I was browsing and came across it. What is a "cant pass it up" price for one? Would look good next to my CS9. ;)

Hypothetically, if I could get it for $250 would that be a steal worth plunging for? For that matter, is $350? $300?

I would try to beat them down on the price but if not its still not a bad price. I have 3 5906's one for each of my sons and one for me and they are great guns, I think they are perfect for range/home defense. With the weight of a stainless gun its easy to shoot all day and not get wore out and 15 round mags are easily bought.

So are yall saying that $350 is a price one cant pass-up on? I see a few on gunbroker for around that price so I figured it was a normal price for a used 5906.

I really dont need it or need to spend the money but I wanted to probe the forum to see at what price I would be stupid to pass it up.

I would call $350 a great price for a solid, used 5906.

I myself probably wouldn't buy that this moment but ONLY because I already have two. I would suggest that anyone who doesn't own one and thinks they may like one that $350 is a smoking deal.

Of course, if I ran across one in top shape and original box for $350, I'd buy it immediately. And then I would have three I suppose.

Well, I guess Ill just have to go make a run at it. Im shooting for $250-300. I just cant pay $350 for it when I see them at that price on GB all day. Like I said, I dont need it I just didnt want to pass on it if the price was great. Its at a pawn shop so I might be able to beat 'em down.

Thanks for the replies.

Take a look at GB's completed sales for 3rd Gen Smiths that actually have bids on them. The lowest priced one is $280 with $50 shipping plus whatever you need to pay for FFL transfer. The best price IMO was one that sold for $335 plus $25 shipping plus (for me) another $25 for transfer. Trust the folks around here that $350 is a good price for a 5906 as long as it is not a beater.

At $300 it would be a great deal, as far as I'm concerned

If they come off the asking price at all and it's what you want, I would snatch it up.

Good luck.

Pay attention to Onward Allusion's post #12. The shipping, the FFL and maybe tax all add up. Plus as has been mentioned you don't get to SEE the gun before it arrives.

But remember, it would be rare for us to tell anyone that asks NOT to buy a gun.

I was already taking into consideration the transfer fees and shipping.

I figure GB = $300 + $25 FFL + $30 shipping = $355. Minus whatever its worth to check it out first in person. That would be hard to put a value on but its something to keep in mind when comparing.

Pawn Shop = $350 + $32 tax = $382. To get it at $355 Id have to get them down to $325 but then that still puts it at a level that I could always go grab it at GB anytime. Like I said, I was only going to pull the trigger on this if it was a "cant pass it up" type of deal. So Im thinking like $275 max which with tax would put it at $300. Thats around $50 off normal GB price plus I can inspect it first hand.

But remember, it would be rare for us to tell anyone that asks NOT to buy a gun.

Lol. Yeah, I was guarding against this. ;)

Thanks again for the replies yall!

If you are saying that Gunbroker can easily/reliably/on-demand net you a working 5906 for an auction end price of $300 before shipping and FFL fees... meaning a $300 auction end price, no reserve or buy-it-now then I say you are MISTAKEN. You can do that for some heavily ragged 915 pistols, which are definitely not the 5906.

Cheapest 5906 that I can find on Gunbroker right now are $350 and generally speaking, the 5906 goes a little higher than that. -YES- some occasional deals can be found, but if the point you are making is that $300 5906's are easy grabs from Gunbroker, I totally disagree.

I'd buy it without question at that price (assuming at least "good" condition)-and I already have a couple third generation Smiths. You won't find many people not liking one of the most under-rated pistols ever made.

A good condition 5906 for $350 is a deal.

Depends ...

Night sights? ... How many mags come with it? ... Is it in the original box w/ factory manual and the 'usual' included items? ... What do the internals look like? Does it show evidence of high round-count abuse or look more like it was a Safe Queen?

For comparison only, I recently scored a 9mm S&W 6906 for $380. No tritium sights, just the standard 3-dot Novaks. But it did come with: 3 12-rd factory mags, hogue grips, the original S&W Derilin grips, factory box, cleaning tools, etc.

This was an L.E. "trade-in" 6906 from somewhere, ... but like most cop trade-in guns, it was carried a lot and shot very little. Thus, I had no real gripe about condition after tearing it down pre-purchase. Externally, there is visible holster wear in several places. Internally, once cleaned up, it was pristine. Mags were in great shape as well.

Worth the $380?

You betcha. ;)

Apples to Buicks... you're talking compact alloy frame and the subject gun is full-size and all steel.

To be a "good deal" at $350, it doesn't need all original box & goodies, it doesn't need 10% glow old night sights, it doesn't need to be a barely-used safe queen because you couldn't wear one out anyway. Any of the above additions or a combination of them and you have a -STEAL- at a paltry $350 in 2017 dollars.
