MTV's Choose or Lose

Every once in a while, just before an election, MTV pretends that it is a news network and tries to get young voters to the polls to further their political agenda. Last week I unfortunately happened upon the "Gun Fight" episode. Although it attempted to be balanced by pointing out that jurisdictions that have implemented Project Exile have seen dramatic reductions in gun crimes, it kept focusing on accidental deaths and "the increasing number of gun deaths" in America. Notably absent was any reference to the huge number of crimes that are actually prevented by the use of a gun. It was as if there was no reason to have guns, and only reasons to get rid of them--how ridiculous. Did anyone else see this and feel the same way? MTV has a website with comments and a stricter enforcement/new law poll. Stricter enforcement is winning, with about 70% of the vote. Here's the link (hope it works): http://www.mtv.com/nav/intro_chooseorlose.html

Done. Boy, I thought I was naive when I was a teen, but some of those kids need a reality check.

I remember in the late sixties an old black guy telling me, "love, peace, sh*t, man! You try that cr*p in my neighborhood and you'll get your fool head shot off!"

"Reality? I _am_ reality." Sergeant Barnes

I just shot a note to all the M-tvoholics, doubt that it'll show up. I was critical of the media. (Seems like a punishable sin, these days don't it?)
Anyway the more I look around the more I realize today's young people (under 25 yoa) have no clue about anything.

now gator dont go lumping all us young folks into one pile there is quite a few of us who know whats going on even a few on this board as for mtv i refuse to watch there garbage i rarely even watch tv any more as there is nothing worth paying for on

At risk of showing my age, I remember when MTV actually ran music videos. Ah, Reagan's first term.......

FWIW, I can't remember the last time I talked to somebody who would admit watching the stupid channel anymore.

Well, Steve, I didn't really plan on watching it, I just sort of stumbled across it ;) I posted a message about their biased report and failure to cover the defensive gun uses, citing the over 6000 DGUs per day (Gary Kleck's study). I actually got a response saying they'd like to post my message on the board, but they wanted to fact-check my statistic. At first I was flattered, so I found a link to Kleck's results. But now, just thinking about it, I question whether they reall want to know, or if it's just a way to keep the truth from really coming out

When I think about MTV (not very often) I remember what a comedy club guy said about it. “You kids think you have it rough? In my day we didn’t have MTV. We hade to take drugs and go to concerts!”

Sorry 30. Didn't mean to imply any fault, as I've done my share of channel-surfing. You ever stop on something and realize later that you're watching Lifetime? The horror, the horror.

What I was trying to say was that I know a fair number of people in MTV's target demographics, and none of them will even consider watching it on purpose. There was a time when I and my friends would have MTV in the background, kind of like the radio with a little eye-candy thrown in, which was, of course, the original idea. Then, we switched to VH-1, because MTV became a 24 hour Real World channel. Then VH-1 stopped playing music, and I don't know anybody from my own age (29) down to 15, or, for that matter, older than me, that can stand to watch either, and I've got friends all over the political spectrum, so it ain't their ignorant politics.

I have got to watch those run-on sentences.

Steve

Steve,
I wasn't offended at all, I was just joking. In fact, sometimes I find myself stopping on foreign language channels for a few minutes before I snap out of it.

I see you've noticed the blondes on the Spanish channels. ;)

Come to think of it, didn't Daisy Fuentes go from a Spanish network to MTV?

Steve

Late night Galavision--YOW.

I got hooked on a Mexican soap opera during my convalescence. Could only understand about every fifth word, but I darn sure wanted to rescue the damsel in distress. :D

Does anybody remember the choose or lose expose that came out right after the first wave of commercials years ago? Seems *none* of the rock stars who did the "Vote or Else" commercials voted in that year's elections.

Oops.

Here is an update on this issue. After being told that MTV wanted to post my comment, in which I cited Gary Kleck's 2.5 million DGUs per year statistic, and after being asked to back up that cite, when I didn't get posted on their site I received the following explanation:

Your comment didn't make it past my boss. First I go through and edit the
hundreds of e-mails we receive down to the small handful of original
insightful intelligent ones, fix all the typos, misspellings, etc., then my
boss goes through and vetoes some of my selections. Sometimes I understand
why. Sometimes, I do not.

Sorry. Thanks for taking the time to write, though, and keep sending us
material. Despite how it may seem, we can always use thoughful commentary
from all sides.

***** I'm flattered by how he sucks up to me to ease the brush-off. This is total b.s. I know they're biased, but this is totally ridiculous. I'm not surprised, though, just disgusted.
