(Tuesday, July 11, 2000) -- It doesn't matter whether you live near
Disney World or not. Rep. Bill McCollum (R), who represents the
Magic Kingdom, wants to represent you in the U.S. Senate.

The problem is, the McCollum who wants to become your next U.S.
Senator is not standing up for your Second Amendment rights.

This is why you must act right away! Please take the sample letter
below and send it to Rep. McCollum immediately. There is still time
to make Rep. McCollum change direction.

On the subject of gun rights, McCollum's voting record has continued
to move closer to that of the notoriously anti-gun Chuck Schumer of
New York . . . and McCollum has increasingly distanced himself from
real pro-gunners like Rep. Joe Scarborough (R) of the first district
of Florida.

For example, after the Columbine High School tragedy in Colorado,
McCollum pushed his so-called "juvenile crime bill" (with 2nd
Amendment restrictions buried in the middle) to the floor of the
House only a few weeks later (H.R. 2122).

Thankfully, the House of Representatives voted down McCollum's
anti-gun bill in June of 1999.

Nevertheless, Rep. McCollum has continued to support efforts to pass
an anti-gun crime bill. Just look at some of the votes that he cast
during the last year and a half, as Representatives have debated
self-defense issues on the House floor:

X The DC Gun Ban. Incredibly, Rep. McCollum voted AGAINST
repealing the gun ban in Washington, D.C. How can a
representative call himself "pro-gun" and yet vote to keep the
nation's most restrictive gun ban in place? (Source:
Congressional Record, June 18, p. H4641.)

X Young Adult Gun Ban. Mr. McCollum introduced a ban that would
punish young adults for the mere possession of certain household
firearms or a magazine holding over 10 rounds. In fact, the
provision would, under many circumstances, even punish law-abiding
youth who are simply target shooting with their parents.
(Source: Ibid., p. H4630-31.)

X Lock-Up Your Safety Requirements. McCollum voted in favor of an
amendment that would force gun sellers to include anti-safety
trigger locks with every handgun sold. Locking up your safety
means that a gun will not be immediately usable in an emergency
and will actually cost lives. (Source for vote: Ibid.,
p. H4628-29.)

X Gun Bans and Gun Owner Registration. Many Capitol Hill insiders
have noted that GOA is responsible for generating so much "heat"
on Congressmen that they have decided to leave the anti-gun crime
bill bottled up in a conference committee.

But Mr. McCollum, not content to let this bill die, has voted for
motion after motion instructing House and Senate negotiators to
bring the anti-gun bill back to the floor -- even though this
bill contains gun bans, background registration checks (for
private sales at gun shows), and more. (Source: Congressional
Records for July 30 and September 24, 1999; and March 15, 2000.)

It should be noted that every single time Mr. McCollum cast his
ballot on the above issues, he was canceling the votes of truly
pro-gun Congressmen like Joe Scarborough of Florida.

Would the notoriously anti-gun Senator Schumer have voted any
differently on the above votes? Absolutely not. Senator Chuck
Schumer was supporting near-identical gun restrictions over on the
Senate side.

You must wonder how long the people of Florida will continue to put
up with a southern version of the New York liberal.

ACTION: Please help send a loud and clear message to Rep. McCollum.
Immediately sign the pre-written letter below and return it to Rep.
McCollum right away. Then get your family and friends to do the
same. Your letters flooding McCollum's office will make our efforts
much more effective. He needs to know that the people of Florida do
not want a crime bill that is full of gun restrictions.

Hon. Bill McCollum
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Rep. McCollum:

I am disappointed in the fact that you have swallowed quite a bit of
gun control in your efforts to pass the juvenile crime bill. From
"lock-up your safety" trigger locks to background registration
checks for private sales at gun shows, you have voted for quite an
array of unconstitutional legislation.

But the clear language of the 2nd Amendment says the right of the
people to keep and bear arms "shall not be infringed." Every piece
of gun control that you have supported is clearly an infringement!

Please use your leadership position to OPPOSE the juvenile crime
bill as long as it contains 2nd Amendment restrictions. England's
comprehensive gun ban hasn't taken guns out of the criminals' hands.
Do we really think that milder gun restrictions will work any better
at disarming crooks in this country? If you vote for any so-called
compromise bill, you will be voting against gun owners, and they
will vote against you.

Sincerely,

(Tuesday, July 11, 2000) -- As a citizen of Mississippi, you are in
a very unique position. Your Senator -- Trent Lott -- is the most
powerful man in the U.S. Senate. He needs to hear from you, since
he can unilaterally stop President Clinton from banning more
firearms, from registering gun owners and from ending gun shows
altogether.

The President is making a tremendous push to put more restrictions
on law-abiding gun owners. But the sad fact is that your Senator,
Trent Lott (R-MS), has supported the President's anti-gun plan!

Last year, Lott voted for the "juvenile justice" legislation -- a
bill that is an outright attack on your right to buy firearms for
protection, hunting or sport. Some of the specific details of the
gun ban that Sen. Lott supported in S. 254 are included below.

It is imperative that you to take immediate action. Let Senator
Lott know that you disapprove of his recent voting behavior. Let
him know that you do not want this juvenile injustice bill, or any
other bill that bans firearms, registers gun owners or ends gun
shows.

Please voice your opinion to your Senator Lott right away. You can
do that by simply signing the sample letter and faxing or e-mailing
it to Sen. Lott. Ask your family and friends to contact Sen. Lott
as well.

Gun Owners of America is the foremost gun lobby committed to
fighting this bill in Washington, D.C. The leading newspaper of
record on Capitol Hill, Roll Call, called GOA the "most aggressive"
gun rights lobby in 1999.

The fact is, it is activism from people like you that makes us so
effective.

With your help, we can kill this horrible legislation. Your letters
flooding your senator's office can make the difference. Please
don't delay!

Count The Many Ways That Sen. Lott Voted To Restrict Your Gun Rights

1. Lott voted to ban the private sale of firearms.

The Senate juvenile bill (S. 254) bans the private sales of firearms
at gun shows unless the gun buyer submits to a government
registration background check. According to government studies from
1989 onwards, any background check system can lead to registration,
despite legal prohibitions. Of course, the danger is that gun owner
registration has historically led to the confiscation of firearms --
including recent examples in New York City and California.

2. Lott may have dealt a deathblow to gun shows.

The Senate bill that Senator Lott voted for allows gun show
promoters to be imprisoned for two years for failure to notify EVERY
attendee of his legal requirements. With this "sword of Damocles"
hanging over gun show promoters' heads, don't be surprised when gun
shows go the way of the horse and buggy.

3. Lott voted to impose unlimited new taxes on your next purchase of
a firearm.

S. 254 will allow federal bureaucrats to slap an indirect tax on
firearms purchasers at gun shows by letting them impose higher fees
on gun show promoters -- fees which, of course, get passed on to
you, the firearm buyer.

4. Why does Lott want to punish parents for letting their kids touch
a gun under many circumstances?

Senator Lott's vote for S. 254 means that if you, as a parent, take
your kid target shooting, you can't even walk to the car to grab a
lunch, without giving your teenage son or daughter a permission slip
to handle the firearm. Otherwise, you would spend a mandatory year
in prison!

5. Lott voted to limit self-defense; supports lock-up your safety
requirements.

The juvenile injustice bill forces gun sellers to include trigger
locks with every handgun sold. Like seat belts, this requirement
will be the first step towards forcing gun owners to lock-up their
guns -- a dangerous condition in life-threatening situations.

6. Lott votes to ban medium capacity magazines.

Senator Lott voted to ban the importation of any magazine that holds
over 10 rounds. This is a direct attack upon the ability of
law-abiding gun owners to defend themselves. Consider that in 1992,
the National Guard and the police refused to engage hoodlums during
the Los Angeles riots. But Korean merchants successfully used their
firearms, with full capacity magazines, to fend off the rioters. It
was their stores that were still standing after the riots.

7. Lott opens the door to BATF harassment of gun owners.

The bill Senator Lott voted for would commit $40 million to
increasing the presence of the BATF -- not to investigate murders,
violent felonies, or crimes of violence -- but to pursue firearms
"offenses" (such as recordkeeping and other innocuous errors).

(Source: Lott voted for all of the above provisions as part of
S. 254. See Cong. Rec., 5/20/99, p. S5725.)

"those who sacrifice

Interesting. I am in Scarborough's district, (I received a letter from him today after I returned a survey he sent) and I was/am planning on supporting McCollum for Senate. Whatever he is, he will be better than the alternative (Nelson). I understand that isn't always the point. I am going to send McCollum a letter, in addition to the ones I have sent in the past.
