Hi Scott! Ya, there was a bit of friction betwixt meself and Eric over there several months ago over the ex-wife and her brother. Oh well, doo-doo happens.
That's my CAS hat, $27 off ebay because of a tiny scar on top about a quarter inch long. Resistol, 5X beaver, Tom Mix style. Nice hat really, but for $27, I'm not worried about it flying off and rolling around in the dirt during a match. That's my 1880 "Tombstone Homey" look.
They're holding up well so far. I've put two or three hundred rounds through the four incher since I scoped it, mostly a handload consisting of 20.0 grains of HS-6, and a cast 450 grain WFN GC (NEI mould #500-380-GC), and CCI-350 primer. This load chronos just exactly 1100 fps, and consistently groups all five into about 1¾" center to center @ 50 yards. My 8⅜ incher doesn't like this load at all though. In it, I most often use 15.0 grains of Unique and a 350 grain WFN GC design cast from a Mountainmolds.com mould. This is a very light "plinking" load that still chronos around 1130 fps, and will put all five into 2½" or less @ 100 yards with the 4x Leupold. I'm still trying to find a heavier cast load that will do the same thing... say a 440 grainer @ 1500+ fps. My original intent with the 2x on the four incher was just for load development, then I was going to take it off and put the rear sight back on, but the look of it kind of grew on me.
When I first received the NEI mould, I called them and complained because it dropped out at about 435 grains, not the 380 that they claimed. They said, "Well it weighs 380 grains with our alloy". Their alloy must have a very high aluminum content.
TFL member Ranger Rick has developed a load using 25.0 grains of H-110 and a 700 grain cast bullet* that chronos 1100+ fps out of the longer barrel. This is a bullet weighing in at .50 BMG bullet weights at a velocity around 40-45% of the Big Fifty, but out of an 8 3/8" handgun barrel! John Ross's "Thunderbolt" consists of a 510 grain cast bullet @ 1700 fps. Even though a 350 grainer @ 1130 fps is really stretching what a .44 mag or heavy .45 Colt load is capable of with similar weight bullets, it's still definitely just a plinker in these monsters. It's a load you can shoot all day with no ill effects. A 275 grain Barnes can be pushed to around 2200 fps, and a 325 grain jacketed bullet can hit 2000+. These are absolutely phenomenal revolvers so far.
*This load has proven to be safe in Ranger Rick's revolver(s), it may not be in yours. Use common sense and safe reloading practices when working up any load.
