I bought some new 22's called QuikShok. They are a Hyper-Velocity 22LR with a 32 grain bullet. Upon impact, they are supposed to split into three equal parts and create three seperate wound channels. Has anyone had any experience with these? I am worried that a 33% chunk of a 22 may be too small to cause significant damage. However, I have no doubt that good placement can do the jobe with just about anything. Any ideas on the matter?

I've had good luck with them in a Ruger MKI, a 10/22, and a Smith& Weasle 22a. Dont shoot them in a Taurus PT22 though. They are a little too hot for it. I have seen some split cases from it so I'm a little worried about quality control. In a rifle or a well built pistol I see no problems. Accuracy from all the above weapons was acceptable. I've not shot any small game with it yet so I cant comment on that aspect of it.

Are you using these for self defense or as a hunting cartridge?

I can see their usefulness in hunting small game (rabbits & such), but I would have to subscribe to the "1/3 of a .22 ain't much" theory if self defense was the goal. I'm no ballistics expert, but I would imagine that, to create a "stop", the little .22 would need as much weight and energy behind it that it can get.

I was hoping for self defense, but I am a little hesitant. I am thinking of staggering every other round maybe to be on the safe side.

We've tested the .22 LR Quik-Shok bullet in ordnance gelatin. Results, including a photo of the bullet shot into a gelatin block, are published at: http://www.firearmstactical.com/briefs27.htm

I don't recommend the .22 LR QS load for personal defense. What kind of gun are you contemplating this load for? Depending on barrel length I recommend either CCI Stinger or Winchester Power Point.

Well, I tried a bunch of them this evening. I never dreamed a box of 22's could have so many misfires. I can't wait until they are all gone.
