Moving to NJ then Cali from Vermont... Tricky!

OK, I need to move to NJ for 3 months, from VT then I am heading to California, which I know is frowned upon by all 2nd Amendment supporters, but this is how it is.

I don't own anything out of the ordinary:

Savage hunting rifle 7mm, Winchester Mod 94 3030, Ruger 10/22 (with 10 rd magazine), Over/Under 12 ga., S&W Sigma .40 (with 10 rd magazine), Ruger Redhawk .44 and Walther P-22 (with 10 rd magazine).

All will be cased and locked, all my ammo will be in locked metal boxes. According to the NRA-ILA State Laws page (NJ), it states;
"No Permit to Carry or FID is Required: 2.To Carry any firearm unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case.... no stopping.... between his dwelling (Vermont) and his place of business, .... or residence and another when moving....."

I am just worried about my short trip and stay there then when I move, I am actually less worried because the Cali laws are clearer and I have time to send in the paperwork etc. since I will be living there for a few years.

Any and all input will be greatly appreciated! I did write down Evan Nappen's number and I am an NRA member, so the legal end is covered, I just don't want to get into any messes at all.

Thanks guys!

Doug.

Bite the Bullet

NJ seems to be one of the places that delights in making gun possession difficult/illeagal even for residents. A three month stay makes you a non-resident, and while you may be within your rights, and may be within the law, some official in a New Jersey uniform may not think so. If that happens, you could be in for a lot of hassle. Might lose your guns, and not just until you are vindicated in court. Some of these places will not give you your guns back, even if a judge so orders. The will just cut you a check.

Rather than keep them with you during your stay in Jersey, it might be a better idea just to bite the bullet, and go without them. Find a dealer in California that will recieve and store them for you. Send them to him, and they will be there when you get there, and avoid the risk of running afoul of the Democratic Peoples Republic of New Jersey.

Of course, CA is not a lot better than NJ, if you like certain guns, but the ones you listed seem pretty vanilla, and probably won't be of great concern as they are not "assault weapons". Plus as a resident, your legal standing is much better defined.

just a thought, good luck however you go about it.

Thanks...

That is a good idea about sending them out there and asking someone to store them for me... Any ideas how to go about that?
What is the best way to ship firearms? I guess my friend at the gun shop should have a better idea...

Thanks!

Someone just suggested....

Hey,

Someone just suggested that I maybe ship them to Reno Nevada and pick them up on my way into Cali, since I would need to be there within 90 days to fill out all the paperwork etc. Since I am driving, and will be stopping to visit family in Iowa, does anyone know how this would fare in Iowa? The rest of the drive is pretty easy and non threatening to gun owners.

Thanks again...
