Moving Companies and Firearms

Spoke with an acquaintance of my parents yesterday and his daughter’s husband recently passed after a long illness. She lives in Texas, but plans to relocate to the Atlanta area right away. They plan to have her belongings packed up and held in storage in Texas and eventually delivered to her new home.

Apparently the husband had a “lot of guns” but the guy I spoke with had no idea exactly how many or what types. He said it did include some combination of long guns and handguns, but again didn’t know the specifics.

So, can she pack these up and have the movers store and eventually deliver them to Atlanta? I realize it may not be the best choice from a security standpoint, but really asking more about the legal aspects of doing this. My first thought is that doing this would be illegal, but I realize the law might have some provision that allows it.

I would ask the moving company,,,

I would ask the moving company about transporting guns,,,
Transporting stuff is their business/profession,,,
Surely they would know the legalities.

There is a federal law that (supposedly) protects a person,,,
Who is transporting firearms across state lines.

So unless possessing the guns is illegal in the destination state,,,
I would think there is nothing to worry about.

But again,,,
The moving company will know.

As far as the legalities go, you should have no issue moving the guns from Texas to Georgia.

There are two practical factors to consider. The first is the policy of the moving company in question. Several consider firearms to be "hazardous," and they won't transport them.

The second is security. If the company does consent to moving firearms, make sure the workers are bonded and that you have detailed records of the guns.

Back in 1979 when my job transfer moved me from Nevada to Arizona, he moving company would not take my guns nor any of my reloading stuff. I had to rent a trailer to handle it all. At least we got lucky and found a house to buy right away. Funny thing though they did haul almost a ton of cleaned wheel weight metal that I used to cast bullets. :D

Moving companies generally* will not take firearms, ammunition or reloading supplies such as powder or primers.

There are a few services that will ship & deliver, or hold for collection. They're primarily designed for things like hunters not wanting airline hassles, but they could probably do a move for you. Try contacting a few & see what they offer.

*Yes I'm sure there is an exception somewhere from someone, that's why I said "generally". Insurance, liability & interstate transport are a minefield of regulations & they don't usually want the hassles that might arise.

I've heard too many stories about moving and storage firms to trust them with any portion of moving a firearms estate, from refusal to damage and theft. Lots of theft, which they will not take responsibility for absent proof they did it. Lots of theft stories. File a damage or loss claim, they will pay by the pound, nothing like the true value. If you pack them yourself and have moved surreptitiously, a loss claim will be denied.

Best thing to do is to take a trip, pack it all up yourself, and move it to a trusted location until she gets settled.
