Its getting a lot of criticism from some high ranking Spec Operators. Supposedly for showing to much SEAL tactics & training. Anyone thought about going to see it?

Mall Ninjas will soil themselves with excitement.

I was always under the impression that special operators would rather remain anonymous. Guess those SEAL guys would rather operate in Hollywood than Afghanistan.

My guess is a lot of it has been subject to movie magic and made more dramatic to sell tickets. There's going to be a lot of scenes that we on TFL will call "B.S.!".

If I get it in my Netflix queue, I'll watch it. Not going to the theaters.

I voted for "Band of Brothers". "Saving Private Ryan" is awesome too. Hard to decide.

Top Gun... with SEALs?

For some reason, I immediately get a mental picture when watching the trailer for "Act of Valor". I picture two Navy officers sitting in an office, talking.

"We haven't met our recruitment goals for the second month in a row. We need to try something new."

"OK, it's not new, but you remember the movie Top Gun? We give top filmmakers access to cool high-tech weapons for a lot less than it's really costing us to deliver them. There's lots of action, hip music, enough danger to make you think it's real, but there's a happy ending. All the main characters are really good-looking and act cool, and they all have inexplicably gorgeous wives and girlfriends. Nothing like that to make a young guy say, Yeah, the Navy is Cool, I Really Want to Join the Navy!"

"Yeah, that's great, but how do we do another movie like that, today?"

;)

Dunno, I've seen it reported that one of the Navy's conditions on making the film was that they got to keep all the raw footage for training use. So probably not too over the top.

The Navy also insisted on having rights to cut anything they deemed a security risk.

I have a feeling that the criticism is staged as a means to make the movie seem more appealing...getting to see secret stuff.

I found it strange that the movie boasts using active duty SEALs. I thought they did their best to keep a low profile. I am just guessing here, but those active duty SEALs are probably all out of the service now or in non-combat operations. It makes no sense to make a movie using your top level defenders when such information would put their lives at additional risk if they were in theatre (combat, not movie).

I think carguychris is onto something.

Just a guess, but the guys who are real active duty SEALS will have small bit parts and never be identified. They will likely be just someone walking across the screen in the background. Most likely their own mothers wouldn't be able to figure out who they are when they watch the movie.

You left out Black Hawk Down and all the ones about the ongoing wars (Hurt Locker, Green Zone, etc)

As a general rule I don't care much for military movies. BHD was very good however. Green Zone was not too bad either.

Interesting. You mean to suggest or outright imply that the movie industry might be making it looks like the SEALs are the main characters in the action when in fact they are cursory extras that might be random background people in the movie? That almost seems misleading. Why would Hollywood do that?

I guess that is a self answering question.

'Black Hawk Down', all the way.

As for 'Act Of Valor'...I thought special operations guys were more 'quiet professional' types vs. 'hey, look how awesome I am!' guys. I'm skeptical, to say the least.

battle los angelos. 12 tons of fired brass after that movie.
seriously though, i will see it. why not. it'll be fun, it has guns. based in reality, maybe some. but it will still be fun.

I heard this was initially made as a recruitment film for the Navy and they were all so impressed they decide to piece together a movie. I suspect the active duty personnel will be in some action movie sequences, but not in a major role in the film. I also feel pretty confident they will not give away any more secrets than all those former SEALs have in the variety of books they are writing.
