Mounting a scope to a Japanese Arisaka Type 99

Hello:

I have a sporterized Japanese Type 99 in 7.7mm x 58 (the bolt handle has been bent over, a monte carlo stock, a Redfield Peep, and a Williams front ramp have been added) that I inherited from my father. I would like to put a scope on this rifle. I asked a gunsmith about doing so back in the mid 70's. He said that the bolt would have to reworked and that the old thumb action safety might be an issue and advised me against doing so.

With the newer long eye relief scopes available (it would have to be 10 to 13 inches of relief) I began to think it might be possible to mount a scope ahead of the breech.

Has anyone done this kind of work or had it done? Is there any commerical mount that would work. I will be using this gun for whitetails at ranges from 50 to 400 yards.

Try a different gunsmith. Thousands of these guns have been scoped in the conventional manner. It is not technically difficult to alter the bolt or to drill and tap the action. The safety is one of the few that can actually be used with a scope without modification.

I am looking for a gunsmith in Birmingham Alabama right now. S and K makes a scout mount for the 7.7. I am going to find a smith and get his advise before I do anything else.

My father found an after-market thumb safety that mounts just behind the closed bolt. I have no idea where he got it and he doesn't remember (he bought it back in the early '60's). That and a properly bent bolt handle makes a conventional mounting possible.

Timney used to make a trigger and safety unit for this gun, (this is what my brother's rifle has on it) but alas, apparently this is no longer the case.
 
It won't matter if you mount a scope ahead of the receiver, but due to the split receiver bridge any receiver scope will have to be mounted higher, even with a bent bolt handle. Some smiths installed side mounts on those rifles and that is a possibility. But note that the receivers are hard (unlike a Mauser) and I would try to find a gunsmith who has worked on them before.
