Mounting a scope on a 700

I just picked up a Remmington 700 in 7mm STW. I have a Leupold VX-2 4-12 I want to mount on it. The problem I am having is it won't fit on STD Leupold rings and bases. The scope fits so tight in between the front bell and magnification ring that the ring won't turn. So, my question is what next best option? Should I go with extension rings or completely move away from the Leupold STD bases?

I would completely move away from the Leupold STD bases, and go to Burris XT bases with Burris Zee, or Signature Zee, or Weaver Grand Slam rings.

By Leupold bases, I am assuming you are referring to what was called "Redfield bases" for fourty years. If so, they are being pushed pretty close to their max of what they can stand on the 7 STW. Dual dove tail is a good option, but I would steer clear of the windage adjustable design. You could get extended bases or extended rings. The choice is yours. I personally think extended rings are ugly as ugly gets. One piece base is also an option. Picatinny one piece would definitely solve the problem.

No matter what brand you use, it sounds like the problem is the ring spacing, so extensions should solve the problem, whereas just changing the brand may not help at all

X Infinity.

Every rifle we own is equipped with a down-angle rail.
Mitigates minor alignment problems with receivers being out-of-true (better to shim or bed a rail- than have to mess with individual rings). A good one-piece base assures the rings are in perfect alignment- the world is your oyster when it comes to ring selection, and you have far more flexibility in scope placement- which seems to be the bulk of the OP's problem. Put the rings wherever you want on the rail...

I haven't yet figured out why rings mounted directly to the receiver hasn't gone the way of the dinosaur yet. If there's an advantage to doing it that way, it's eluded me.

The advantage of two piece bases is lighter weight, and nothing over the opening in the reciever to interfere with loading or ejection

A rail doesn't fix any misalignment problems if the holes in the receiver are off, since it's just another type of base "mounted directly to the receiver"

It just gives you more options for ring spacing, which is needed most often with variable scopes with large objectives that don't leave much area for the rings

It will also work better for long range situations where the elevation needs to be adusted with the base rather than the turrets since the ring to scope alignment remains the same no matter how much angle is used

Well, yeah. Nobody suggested that he buy the same type of mount with a different brand name.

DNZ Gamereaper.

+1. I have their one piece mount on one of my 700's. It's a base and rings all in one, so there's no seperate parts to come loose or move around and no need for lapping to get a perfect fit. If you prefer not to have a one piece base, Talley makes some great 2 piece ring/base combos.

I am not a fan of the Leupold STD bases and rings either

The Leupold extension rings will fix the problem, and when properly installed they are bullet proof.

I also like the steel leupold weaver style bases with Leupold PRW rings provided the fit is correct.

Well I ended up just going with the extension rings because they were given to me. I still wanted to thank everyone for their responses. I have some ideas for when I build my either 26 Nosler or 340 Weatherby on my spare 700 action. :D

I have the same set up (rifle and caliber) except my scope is the VX-3 and it works fine with the Leupold base and rings. Is the VX-3 scope a bit longer than the VX-2?
