Motel lock box security

We took a trip to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky on Saturday. I have a ccw permit in my state (Ind) and that permit is valid in KY.
Being on federal property as Mammoth Cave is a National Park I was not allowed to carry.
I opted to leave my pistol in one of the lock boxes at our hotel.
I felt uneasy about leaving my gun anywhere, so I took some steps to make me feel better.
I was not as worried about theft as I was use of my gun should it be stolen.
So I disassembled it and took the barrel with me. I felt fairly confident no nut case would just have a P-32 barrel lying around.
The front desk attendant gave me the box to take back to the room and put my items in, then return the box to the desk and they keep one of the keys, and being a dual lock box, you keep a key.
This worked for me.

And if you hear from my Louise, won't you tell her I love her so?

My lock box is under the spare tire in the trunk...
While that method seems OKAY - your depending on the participation of someone else for retrieving your item. This isnt cool with me, personally.

There are lots of places in your car that you can stash your heater - and when your car is locked up its about as safe as it can be.

This is NOT a flame, but.....
I've had three of my cars stolen, and two broken into.

I had a car taken from my driveway early one Sunday morning. I hunted mall parking for hours ... just hoping. felt like I lost my kid. Also, a couple weeks ago on a trip to MD, my car was towed from grandaughter's apartment parking lot for not having a sticker or visitor tag - at 3:30 AM. I'm really reticent about leaving "valuables" in a locked car. AND, I hate the fact I have to go naked (so to speak) just crossing state lines. I went down to NC for my kid's bypass operation - on the way back I was stopped at a NC DMV road block with trooper checking passenger vehicles. Nice enough fellow, but what if I had brought my "valuables" along?

Whatever happened to that Constitution clause that says all states will recognize the statutes of other states ... like Vermont with the same-gender marriage deal - shouldn't that also apply to a VA State Court issued CCW (CCHG) permit? Hmm?

Perhaps I should have seen "GONE IN 60 SECONDS", I don't know if it would have helped....one of the stolen cars was taken from the Commanding General's parking lot at Fort Gordon, GA. a new 1968 Ford Toreno.
The FBI recovered the car in Florida and took into custody the two Army recruits that stole it. I can't understand why the CID refused to allow me to escort the two prisoners back to Ft. Gordon. Something about no,not even if you were the last NCO in the US Army. :)

Just using that lock box screams "valuable stuff here!" I would not trust a motel clerk with anything important. If I can't keep the weapon on me, I'd rather run a cable lock through the barrel and lock it to a solid pipe out of sight under the sink or something.
