Most unsafe cities/Gun laws

The FBI just released it's list of the most unsafe cities. I would be curious to know the gun laws of these cities. The only one I have real experience with on the list is Birmingham, AL. That is the only place I have ever had to draw a weapon as a civilian in my entire life. The list of the ten most dangerous from lest to worst are as follows...

362. Gary, Ind.

363. Youngstown, Ohio

364. Oakland, Calif.

365. Cleveland

366. Birmingham, Ala.

367. Camden, N.J.

368. Compton, Calif.

369. Flint, Mich.

370. Detroit

371. St. Louis

I know Cleavland has their own gun control laws.

The Cleveland ordinance prohibits possession of a semi-automatic: centerfire rifle or carbine that accepts a detachable magazine with a capacity of 20 rounds or more; shotgun with a magazine capacity of more than 6 rounds; handgun that is either a modification of a rifle described above, or a modification of an automatic firearm, or was originally designed to accept a detachable magazine with a capacity of more than 20 rounds. Exempt are firearms that use .22 caliber rimfire ammunition with a detachable magazine with a capacity of 30 rounds or less.

Cleveland gun laws

I believe the polititions that favor CCW in Ohio are trying to change the law that in effect will not allow cities in Ohio to have their own little controls in their cities. One CCW law for the state and no city can over turn that law. Hope it passes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I don't live in STL but I'm close. We have CCW in Missouri but you can't use it in various places in STL, such as the Metro system(bus and train service), or on the arch grounds(fed law not local). If I go to STL I always have a little friend with me.

Note those numbers are based on VIOLENT crimes. I know for a fact thanks to my NYPD buddy that crimes are reported by the police according to what numbers they want. His perfect example from personal experience was.

Arrest a guy for holding someone up with a knife.

Charge in the real world: Robbery (Violent Crime combining use of deadly force and theft).

Charge in the NYC Fantasy World: Menacing and Petty Larceny. (Neither a Violent Crime).

This is the decision made by the precinct brass in order to show lower violent crime numbers and therefore make the Precinct, City, Police and Mayor all look good. It is routine procedure to adjust the charge to remove as many reported violent crimes as possible.

One must wonder how the cities would line up if real statistics were used...

Remember, numbers never lie but liars will use numbers.

The top-ten list contains cities that are all known either for heavy drug trade, gangs, or hate groups. Supposedly, St. Louis is getting pretty bad on all three fronts.

I don't think the "self-defense" issue is really adding much fuel to these statistics. This looks like criminals killing criminals, IMHO...

Interesting thing is that St. Louis city is separate politically from the rest of the metro area, and has a population of around 200-300,000 or so... Maybe less. Businesses don't like the city because of the 1% city earnings tax. There was also a LOT of publicity about "St. Louis is still gun free" after CCW got passed here... So, I'm guessing that criminals from some of the adjacent areas went into the city to do their thing...

The real headline

Mayors/Police Chiefs of St. Louis, Detroit and Flint are not smart enough to manipulate the crime statistics for their cities.

They will be attending a seminar hosted by Mayor Bloomberg (at $10,000 per attendee) next week to learn about "Innovations in Crime (reporting) Reduction".

Interesting, of the top 25 cities, several key anti-cities are missing such as Chicago, NY, LA, and Boston. Of course, maybe they failed to report.

Also interesting is that a city like Dallas is in the top 25 in 2400's 2004 list from infoplease and doesn't have any particularly different laws than the state of Texas.

In looking at more recent data from 2006, the rankings are a bit different...

(note, they are rated safest to least safe)

Also, only those cities that reported figures for crime rates were included on the list. My town is on the list (in the middle), while our state's capital city (eight times the population) is not. The list is not in any way complete.

Wow...we're moving up on the list, and people wonder why I carry. Take that east St. Louis! -BamaXD
I do not blame you at all. Birmingham is a great city but can be very dangerous once the sun goes down. As I mentioned before, it is the only place in civilian life I have ever had to brandish my weapon in self defense.

I was the victim of an attempted car jacking where they used the method of pinning us front and back at a stoplight right off of I-65 as you go into downtown. Luckily I had my .357mag Taurus 65 close at hand. Just the sight of it made them decide to jump in their cars and run for it. I guess there were easier targets to be had.

Yeah, some parts are defintely worse than others. But I always keep my XD close, afterall its better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Its good that you came out on top of that situation. -BamaXD
