Most U.S. teens for tighter gun control, survey says

By DAVID HO, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (August 21, 2000 10:43 a.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - About nine out of 10 high school students support gun-control measures such as mandatory trigger locks and criminal background checks, a survey released Monday said.

The same number of students said they favored requiring a safety course and a license to purchase a handgun, and 96 percent supported registering the weapons when purchased so they could be traced if necessary, said Dennis Gilbert, a sociology professor at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. who designed the survey with his students.

"American high school students have a shockingly high level of exposure to guns and gun violence," Gilbert said in an interview.

The polling firm Zogby International conducted the nationwide telephone survey during three days in June by calling 1,005 high school sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Students in the East and South were most likely to support gun control, followed by those in the West and Midwest, the poll found.

A quarter of the students said they or someone close to them had been shot in a situation unrelated to military combat. The proportion that rose to nearly half for students living in cities with populations greater than half a million.

One junior at an urban high school in the Midwest said a close friend had been shot dead while playing basketball, while others reported hunting accidents and other firearm mishaps, the study said.

While four out of five students said the government should keep guns away from criminals even if it becomes harder for everyone else to purchase them, the same number said Americans have a constitutional right to own firearms.

Gilbert said the students were more likely than adults to support both increased regulation and the right to own a gun.

"Maybe in their world there's just a lot more guns around and it seems more compelling to them," he said.

Nearly half the students said they thought it would be easy for someone their age to get a gun in their neighborhood, but only 6 percent described their schools as unsafe.

The survey also found:

More than 80 percent of high school students have discussed gun control in school, at home or with friends.
Of the girls questioned, 79 percent favored stricter gun laws, compared with 52 percent of boys. Girls were also more likely to become involved in gun-control activities.
The Alliance for Justice, a coalition of advocacy groups perhaps best known for monitoring federal judicial nominations, released the study as part of a campaign against gun violence.

The poll, financed by Hamilton College's Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center, had an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

I'm not buying that 1/4 of high school students have been or have 'someone close to them' that have been shot. I think this is a case of six degrees of separation, people ascribing 'knowing' somebody when they really heard about it from someone else, or the person lived in the same town. Or else their polling data is based soleley in Compton, South Chicago, South Bronx, etc.

This poll is a good case for home schooling.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste, poor little heads of MUSH, so much for the new math ,liberal teachers teach liberal ideas

Most teens in America support a drinking age of 16, no curfews, and a total ban on homework.

Since when did we put them in charge?

Oh yeah, 1967...I forgot.

This body, TFL, should consider another programme we could all participate in.

Take a child to the range day.

.22 is cheap. The lessons taught and the eyes opened will be priceless.

My letter to the managing editor chall@newsday.com and CEO rjansen@newsday.com

"Newsday and the AP must bring a smile to the ghost of Josef Goebbels. I can hear him whisper "You have done well, grasshoppers."

One instance of the article's slant:

"Students in the East and South were most likely to support gun control, followed by those in the West and Midwest, the poll found."

How about: "Students in the Midwest and West were less likely to support gun control, followed by those in the South and East, the poll found."

Before the advent of the Internet, you could suppress criticism of your choice of articles. Now that you are online, the whole world can, and does, take a shot at you.

Are you aware of the damage articles like this do to your credibility? I found it on a couple of message boards, with attribution to Newsday, under the following epithets:
"Agitprop 101", "Newsday Treats Junk Science as News", and my favorite, "This month's nominee for The Josef Goebbels Excellence in Propaganda award". Granted, this originated from the AP, a known anti-gun organ, but by printing this drivel you're guilty by association.

The least you could have done is print an article pointing out the flawed methodology: "A quarter of the students said they or someone close to them had been shot in a situation unrelated to military combat. The proportion that rose to nearly half for students living in cities with populations greater than half a million." Well, if 10 students knew the same person had been shot, wouldn't that skew the results? Doesn't ANYBODY have a critical mind at Newsday?

Is it any wonder the public looks upon the media as intellectual whores for the government and call reporters
"presstitutes"? What ever happened to the PROFESSION of Jounalism?"

Some "poetic license" taken.

I breathlessly await their reply.

Hmm that cant be true!!!! Most everyone (that is a teen) that I know likes guns, and wants to shoot in matches, and go plinking. I think there is ONE person I know that isnt into all that stuff. (Though they dont dislike guns). I tend convert anyone I meet that doesnt like guns into liking them. Just have to take them out to the range once and they love it! (Have done that with people that never even touched a gun before, and they liked it)

Our Founding Fathers, who believed that our rights come from God and can not be taken away by any man/woman (King/Queen) or government, did NOT create a system of government where majority rules (using that form of logic, there was nothing wrong with the policies and acts of Nazi Germany) -- recent generations have seemed to forget about this very important point. As someone else pointed out on TFL, democracy is NOT two wolves and a lamb deciding on what is for supper.

Much of this comes from the fact that for many, many years, the Marxist Socialist controlled media and schools, have been incessantly demonizing gunowners, turning them/us, into vermin, just as Hitler, Goebbels, and their merry band of "pest controllers", exterminated the "vermin" of Germany and much of Europe.

The object of the communistnazis of America? Eventually, the "vermin" here, must be exterminated. How better to do it than to brainwash decades of children??

J.B.

I've said on many threads that the ultimate goal is the elimination of the gun culture, and the removal from any positive gun experiences from the next generation. With that step accomplished, gun confiscation can be easily accomplished when the latest generation has reached adulthood.

Since that generation will have NEVER experienced gun ownership, disarming the remaining "vermin" can be done with nary a whimper.

Looks like it's working....

Just more reason to take kids out to the range, while we still can. :(

ps: Dennis, that quote is from HL Mencken, not O'Rourke. FWIW.

Yeah, they also think Britney Spears is a cultural icon. I don't need hgh schoolers telling me what the Constituton says, that's why God created adults.

Hey dennis that wont be true if this place goes code three nation wide before that time :)

90+% of these idiots are part of the pepsi generation, and as I and others (Hitler) said all the antis have to do is wait long enough for the older generation to die off and they win. That is until they start building the camps, But then again whos coming to rescue anyone once they start their elimintation of the unwanted elements?

Most people around my age (19) are anti gun. Everyone that comes to my dorm room (I have HK posters on the wall), or that hears me say that I want to get a gun thinks I'm insane. It's quite sad. Even one of my good friends asked me if I was paranoid because I told him I was reading Massad Ayoob's The Truth About Self-Protection. My friends think I'm a nut.

Incursion, I hope you don't let it bother you. You've made an intelligent choice to be responsible for your own defense. The sheep around will learn this hard lesson over time. At least, most of them will. Some will never have to, and some won't survive.

Live and let live. Regards from AZ
