Most Effective 22lr Round

Had a recent run in with a pole cat. The 22 did its thing but it got me to wandering. What is the most reliable 22lr ammo for a one shot stopper? This is out of a Savage 64 series 22 semi auto.

I always use CCI Stinger or (preferably) Remington Yellow Jackets. The YJs got hard to come by some years back and I switched to Stingers. Never shoot 22 anymore. Neither of those is going to give you bench rest accuracy but they're the best I've found for making things be dead.

Amen on the Stingers! Been using them since they came out. The old standard CCI High Velocity Mini Mag HP drives tacks and never lets me down, as well.;)

You know I just use Federal bulk ammo from Wal-Mart. $20 + tax for 550 rounds of HP .22lr.

I've shot raccoons with it out to 50yds with good kills. Out beyond that and they will still die but not nearby. At 50 yards I find the bullet penetrates through the chest of a raccoon. I shot one last week at just a hair over 50yds (paced from my position to where I shot it) and the coon ran about 10 yds and died under a bush. When I found it the bullet had traveled through the chest and the coon's lungs and heart were partially drawn out the exit wound that was actually big enough for me to stick the tip of my pinkie finger into it (didn't stick my finger in there, just eye'ed up the size of the hole).

Shot a rabbit in my wife's garden last night - distance from my position to the rabbit was approx. 75 yards. Put one through its chest and the bullet took a diagonal travel path through the body - dragging intestines and stomach out of the exit wound between the rear legs. That rabbit died on the spot.

I also put a feral cat down at 25 yards with a shot from my Ruger Single Six using the same ammo. I must admit I got lucky and hit it in the head - I was aiming for the vitals - but it went down where it was hit. I also took a feral cat down in my neighbor's barn with a shot from my Single Six to the vitals. It jumped, dropped and went into its death throes. I walked up to it while it was thrashing about and put one in its head to ensure a quick death. Distance was about 15 ft.

Every feral cat, coon, rabbit and rat I've killed in the last few years has been with Federal bulk .22lr HP aside from the few I've shot at my buddy's property with his .17HMR.

EAsy ANswer: CCI Velocitor

It is the CCI Velocitor. There is a similar Aquilla but it is not reliable and the bullet clearly inferior to the CCI's powerpoint which flattens a bit but maintains its mass. At 1,400 fps for a 40 gr. head you just won't generally do any better for retained energy and effect in a .22 LR. But expect to pay what its worth!

I've heard excellent reports of the CCI SGB. A flat point but far better performance than people think !

CCI

Well at 11 cents per round a box of 50 isnt that big a deal. I think I will pick some up next time im in wally world or wherever. The stinger and velociter both seem to get nice reviews so it may just be a matter of whichever is on the shelf.

Vermont:

Remember this, only hits count. .22lr ammo accuracy can really vary. You rifle may like Winchester, and mine may like CCI.

Test your rifle with what ever you choose. My rifle likes CCI Mini Mags and will keep them in .7" @ 50 yards. That is what makes it effective for my rifle.

I can't imagine any modern "high velocity" HP (or RN, for that matter) having trouble putting down a weasel. I've seen several racoons, opossum and even large groundhog put down swiftly by the lowly 40gr LRN.

It would be hard to narrow down the best performer these days with the plethora of hyper-velocity this and pre-segmented that. I like exotic fodder as much as the next guy, but I'd feel most comfortable with the CCI Velocitor.

Vermonter I have killed more than my fair share of skunks and as strange as it may sound the more devastating rounds don't work as well as a simple little CB, place it behind the front leg, through both lungs and walk away. It will die in a few minutes with no spray. Head shots with .22 and even 12 ga. shotguns usually leave a goodly amount of essense of skunk around for a while. I think the quiet pop and no hit on the major bones doesn't alarm the skunk so it doesn't feel the need to spray. Have removed them from campgrounds and around houses that way several times.
