Most common accidental felony

I also belong to a SciFi group that is always trying to re-create the Pulse rifle from the movie Aliens. It is a M1A1 Thompson with a VERY cut down Rem 870 express jammed into a backwards Franchi SPAS cage. We are constantly reminding people that it would be a felony to re-create this as a civilian.

Are there any other "Don't do that!!!"s that people are unaware of?

The Dragunov stock is a thumbhole stoch BTW. I have one on my Norinco AK and it's not in violation on a 922r.

An SKS is a C&R firearm. Different animal.

I don't think all SKS rifles are on the C&R list, tenntucker. I count exactly three on the C&R list. Maybe I'm missing something...
Romanian Model 56 semiautomatic carbine (SKS), caliber 7.62x39mm in original configuration as manufactured at Uzina.

Russian (U.S.S.R.), Simonov, semiautomatic rifle, model SKS, cal. 7.62 x 39, of Soviet manufacture.

Albanian SKS semiautomatic rifles, caliber 7.62x39, manufactured in Albania from 1964 to 1978. This one still falls under the GCA '68.

With the Norinco, it was never a C&R firearm as it is on the importation ban list. So you are correct in that respect. The one's already in this country cannot be altered without following ATFe requirements. The 922r restrictions only come into play on the rifles on the importation ban list not meeting a sporting purpose clause.

As to modifications to the one's that are C&R, changing the stock takes it off a C&R eligibility list. It doesn't make it a illegal weapon. It can be sold with the black stock. It has to follow the same preceedures as a modern rifle.

reils,

Which just really sucks butt. Especially cause my pre-ban 15rndrs for my 92F/CX4 are legal, but the post ban 13 rndrs for my 8000L (if I had any ;)) aren't!! What CRAP!

i know Shield. My sks mags are pre-ban, and NY legal. but CA (where Im stationed) has the worst hi cap magazine ban Ive dealt with. unfortuneately Im stuck here for another 2 years.

Now I am confused..... a SciFi group member is not a civilian?

On the SKS, whether you can trick it out depends upon, IIRC, whether or not it come into the country prior to a certain date in 1989. If it came in since then, 922(R) applies; if it came in before then, 922(R) does not apply, and you can trick it out to your heart's content (provided you don't make an SBR or AOW out of it with the appropriate licensing). The trick is, figuring out when your particular SKS came in - maybe this can be done by serial number lookup; I dunno. The key question you have to ask yourself is, "Is there any marking on this rifle through which the government can PROVE that it came in post-89?".
