Maybe this has been around before..

What is the most accurate caliber you have ever shot?.
Are the small calibers more accurate than the big ones.
I shoot 223 and i am very impressed with it's accuracy.
I can't say for the big guns as i have never shot one more than once or twice.

I did get the oppertunity to shoot a 50 cal BMG here about a month ago.Generally as a rule i don't shoot other peoples guns,but i thought,,I might never get the chance to shoot a 50 cal again so i did.It was more accurate than i thought it was going to be at 300 yards.
 
In my case 180 grain Remington Corelokt .30 cal, 200 LSWC 45 cal, 148 gr LSWC 38 cal and half a dozen brands of 40 gr 22 cal bullets.
 
The Key is what Distance....

Accuracy is good but at what distance?

Are you looking at 100 yards, 200.... 400.... 600 or 1000 yards?

Then it comes to set up - what platform and then what optics... then skill: calculations and experience.

For me I am iron sights at 300 meters with my Sig556 at gongs. Sitting, standing and prone.
 
Oldkim,,Yes i am talking 500 to 1000 yards. Shooting 100 and 200 with a rifle is IMHO a waste of ammo.Sorry i do use a scope.You guys that shoot with iron sights(My hat is off to ya) That definetly takes talent for sure.

I don't think you can answer that question.

I think its the shooter more then the caliber. We can shoot some calibers better then we can others, IN DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS, and some platforms are easier to shoot.

For example, lets take the Service Rifle. People found that they could shoot the M14 better then the M1. But the '06 can be made to shoot as well as the 308. People even shoot the M14 better then the 308 chambered M1s.

The comes the ARs, They are out shooting the M14s in service rifle. Even at 1000 yards. I don't think the 223 is more accurate then the 308, but it's easier to shoot. People are getting distinguished earlier, and at younger ages now days, more woman and youngsters are getting their badges, not because of the round is more accurate, but it's easier to shoot.

I use to shoot a lot of 1000 yard matches where we shoot 4 matches in a day; Any rifle/any sight, any rifle/iron sights, Service rifle and team match.

I used a Model 70 300 WM in all but the service rifle match, I most always shot the 300 better with iron sights, and often out shot the 300 with a M14. Why? not because the 308 was better then the 300, but it was me, I shot iron sights better, and I shot the M14 better then the M-70 (because the M-70 was a lot heavier and had more recoil.

Its not just target shooting. Lets look at hunting. We all know the 300 WM is an accurate long range round. Yet most hunters can shoot a 243 better then the 300. We can't say the 300 is less accurate then the 243, we can say the 243 is easier to shoot for most people.

So its not the caliber, its the shooter first, then the platform, then the ammo.
 
Up to 600 yards, the most accurate rifle I have shot is a much modified .223.
Over 600 yards, the best is a friend's full custom 6mm Remington on a Tikka action. History has bypassed the 6mm Rem in favor of the .243 Win and a whole host of 6, 6.5, and 7mm factory and wildcat rounds, but that does not mean it is not a good performer.

But the true (and unsatisfying) answer is "whichever reasonably suitable caliber you have the best barrel and ammunition for."

Lake City 173 gr. FMJ. I don't know if they are making it anymore. Shot it out of M1 Garands, both match rifles, one .308 and one 30-06 at 600 and 1,000 yards. Everything up to that point was 147 gr military issue.
 
I can only give a 100 yard results on these rifles. So

6.5 X 55 swede, M-96 military mauser barrel cut to 21" coned, stock bedded, bolt turned down, timney target trigger installed, and a CHEAP scope. When I shot it a number of years ago the groups were literally the size of a dime at 100 yards. I couldn't believe my eyes on this one. Since then I've heard of others having the same results with this type of rifle.

Savage 93R17--17HMR, another tack driver.

Honorable mention is the H&R ultra varmit bull barrel .223. I had to work my buns off on this one to get it to shoot right. (float fore arm, reduce trigger pull, fire lap the barrel)
 
Other than that,, I have also been to this airgunbbs sight.Got a what turned out to be a awesome load for 75 gn Hornady a-max bullets in a 223.

24.0 gns rl-15
75 Hornady a-max
rem 7 1/2 primer
2.475 COL.

Shot them on Wednesday,got 1/2 groups at 300 yards and had a speed of 2930fps,which in my book is dang fast for a 75 gn bullet in a 223. 5 shot group at 300 yards. Did same load with CCI 400 primers and was very disapointed.

Loaded 35 more rounds and will see if i can duplicate this on Sat morning. Will post results for all that are intrested.
 
While helping a friend sight-in his FN Mauser deer rifle, chambered in .270, I shot a 3-shot group at 100 yards that I could cover with my thumbnail. I don't know that I couldn't do it with a 7mm, but if the bullets were much bigger than that, my thumb wouldn't have covered the group!
 
Well i shot today and i have now found the load i will be using from here out. 300 yards and 3/4 groups,consistantly. 2.475 COL for a 223 is long and will not fit in a mag,but i bench shoot and load 1 at a time any how. And with a 75 gn bullet i should be able to get out to my 600 to 1000 yards with it also...
 
.308 for long distance shooting and a .204 for 200 yards or less. The only reason why I dont go out futher with a .204 is wind drift. But most of this questions relys on the shooter more than the round. Many good top notch reloaders can custom load rounds that will out perform any factory load . So I'd say 50% shooter. 25% gun 25% ammo. No I take that back 100% Ammo , 100% Shooter and 100% Firearm. :D Its like golf you have to have all three to stay in the game.
