Most Accurate 45acp load

I shoot a Giles 45acp [Colt] in a modified police course at ranges that include 10,15 and 20 yds. I have access to very low cost 200gr LWC bullets and shoot them with Win 231 powder. Is there a better powder out there for this type of shooting? Please give me your opinions and please also include amounts of powder used.

"...in YOUR gun..."

Mebbe.

Suggest 4.4--5.0g W231, and varying OAL, too.
Sufficient?

3.4--4.0g Bullseye.
Sufficient?

Change bullet.
Retry.

For Bullseye courses, I use 3.5gr of 700X under a 185 or 200gr hard cast bullet. This is with a light springed Gold Cup. I would think that 231 would also be excellent propellent as would Bullseye. Quantrill

Yeah...

the Bullseye shooters who beat me on a regular basis use:

Matched cases of no particular brand,
WW or Federal or CCI primers,
200 grain (more or less) cast lead bullets from 'Star', and
just under 4 grains of Clays. Consult your loading manual.

I get good accuracy from the Hornady 200 grain SWC 'knurled' bullets.

Clays burns very cleanly. Not much smoke in air, easy to clean.

This assemblege works well in most of the target shooter's guns I know personally. I'm thinking of trying it in PPC competition as well.

Most Accurate 45 ACP Load

Thanks for your input. Right now Im shooting 5 gr of Win 231 and it works well. I tried a 4.4 load with 231,but the gun wouldnt cycle. Many of my fellow shooters use Bullseye and I will try that next. Later on Ill give Clays a try. Thanks again

231 works well int eh 45 ACP. Make some test loads with 4.4, 4.6, 4.8 and 5 gr of W231 under that 200 gr bullet . See which ones shoot to POA and cycle reliably. I found that 4.6 or 4.8 of W231 work well in any of my 45 ACP.s ( In fact a Local guy sells reloads that are 4.6 231 over 200 gr SWC as his 'factory reload".)If you desire a slightly cleaner load, try 4.0 gr of Clays. It produces about the same performance and recoil as 4.6 of 231 but burns a little cleaner.

Geez .45acp loads!

Hello, in my testing I found equal accuracy, that is the goof ole cloverleaf at 25yds with Duponts PB, Unique, WW-231, Bullseye...need I go on?
I use a quality 200gn H&G as found from Meister, Colo Cast, etc loaded to 800-900fps (find your follow through/recoil combo!).

Best .45 Load

I agree with Tacoma, Clays @4.0 Gns under a LSWC.@1.250 OAL. I have 800 rounds loaded of this. Cleaner than 231 or bullseye. Lead bullets are dirty enough by themselves. Very accurate and light recoil. Through my Kimbers.

I shoot USPSA competitions and have had great luck with Hodgdon Titegroup. I have also used Clays, WST, and W231. I am pretty happy with both accuracy, cleanliness, and efficiency of the Titegroup. I load straight from Hodgdon's reloading manual. Tried the downloading both 200gr and 230gr hardcast down to the minimum PF for USPSA, but have found full loads to be more accurate and reliable. Felt recoil is a bit more, but not too noticably.

Good Luck.
