Most accurate .40 cal to take to the range?

I traded in my .40 cal Ruger on a Springfield 1911 the other day and it leaves me without a .40 in my lineup. I'm not so much interested in a .40 as a carry gun, I'm more interested in having one that I can take to the range and put a whole bunch of holes in the X-Ring. I seldom (never) pay more than $600 for a gun.

I liked the Ruger, it was reliable, sturdy, and I shot a thousand or so rounds with it, but it always had trouble finding the bullseye. It was also plug-ugly. Somebody let me know which .40 cal I oughtta buy next if I wanna hit the small circle in the middle of the target...

I've already got a CZ75 in 9mm that'll do the job, so I don't really want to buy another CZ and it would seem like a waste to buy another Government model in .40 after having just bought a .45--variety being the spice of life and all...

Thanks for the advice!

Triggers exist to be pulled... again and again.

Hello, Gremlin. While I'm not a big forty fan, I do own one currently, a Browning HP.
With loads it likes, it's quite accurate and a pleasure to shoot. Since you state it would be for range use, whatever pistol you choose would likely be shot single-action so the fact that the HP is a SA auto is not a "disadvantage" as some might opine. (I prefer SA autos.) Anyway, just a thought. Best.

How 'bout this?

G24/35, SIG 239/229/226, USP, BHP, Beretta.

While you might find a S&W Sigma, 4006, or G27/22/23 that likes certain loads, they are usually noticeably worse than the first group above.

i have a 4006 that was worked over by Cylinder & Slide. it will shoot groups with almost any ammo that will make draw a crowd when i shoot it at the range. it will shoot same hole to clover leaf groups at 15 yards and under 1 inch at 25 yards.

When I was at the range a couple weeks ago, a man had a Glock .40. He hit a paper ammo box at 100 yards twice in a row. Couldn't do it again though.

When we took breaks during firearms week at police academy, we would shoot the 2" wide steel target stand poles from barricade rest against the side of a 4X4 post with our pistols on the 100 yard rifle range. I hit it 6 out of 10 times once with my Glock G22. I probably couldn't hit a 10" wide pole at that distance now. I just don't practice like I used to. Anybody got any spare practice ammo they don't want?

Glock 27, which seems to shoot better than a Glock 23 from both personal experience and feedback from others. I've gotten 2" groups at 50' offhand with one. A Sig 2340 will punch a ragged hole offhand at 25', as will an S&W 99 although the trigger sucks.
