"Most accurate .22 rifle?"

I'm asking this question as a new thread at the risk of duplicating archived posts because doing a search for .22 rifles would generate an enormous number of hits. But a search for "precision 22" kicked out a few good threads. http://www.thefiringline.com/NonCGI/Forum3/HTML/000387.html
This one reported that the 10/22's twist rate is not sufficient for the 60 grain SSS which might be best for windy range shooting. http://www.thefiringline.com/NonCGI/Forum3/HTML/002732.html

I'd rather narrow it down to the best of precision .22 bolt or lever action rifles (unless an auto-loader measures up - which the 10/22 just might with the right barrel). What make, model, and specifications would push .22 LR to the limits of the best shooters and ultramatch ammo? Anschutz keeps coming up as a brand of choice for Olympic class precision shooting. Maybe we should limit the discussion to sub $1000 rifles such as the Ruger 10/22 (which can be built up from a starter to a fairly serious target rifle) and the Anschutz 64MP and 1903 since there ARE some really specialized masterpieces out there. http://www.championshooters.com/Anschutz-r.htm

Oh, oh. With the above (garnered from the following forum) I've fallen over the edge into the purist camp. This could get really serious. :) http://www.benchrest.com/rimfire_board/

This forum at TFL may be able to hit the middle ground without going overboard into $5000 rifles extreme match ammo.

The Anschutz is probably the most accurate in that price range. The Kimbers are beautiful and maybe as accurate.

My most accurate 22 is the M2 Springfield. With a Lyman 48 Rear Aperture sight and cheapie Federal ammo ($9.50 for 550 from Walmart), I got a 1 1/2" group wide by 1/2 group high at 100 yards. The 1 1/2" was just sloppy old me and in the hands of a real rifleman, will probably shrink to 1/2".

Hard question. Those M1922's can really shoot. I would love to try one of the NRA tapped models with an old Winchester A5 or Unertl scope.

For a non-full bore target rifle, the new Kimbers are incredible. My Kimber .22 HS Hunter Silhouette will outshoot some of my target rifles. I have had .31 inch 50 yard groups with it. The factory 50 yard test target with Federal Gold Medal Ultra Match was .280". I have had it since May and everytime I shoot or handle it I am impressed.

I also have a Beeman/Krico 340S that is a pretty decent runner-up.

I like the Ruger Model 77/22. It is suppose to be a copy of the OLD Winchester Model 52 target rifle. With the correct ammo. it WILL SHOOT!

Back in the eighties I set out to find the
most accurate ,most solidly built .22 rimfire
rifle made. Over a period of time I owned
Winchester 52s in both sporter and target
configurations,Both a Browning T bolt and
semi auto, several older Remington high end
rimfires,a then-new to the market Kimber
"Super America", and other high end rifles
I've forgotten. I wanted one quality rim-
fire rifle " to have and to shoot til death do us part".
Ended up with the Anschutz 54 sporter. As I recall it was over 600 dollars used. That was
a lot of money then for "just a .22".
To this day it remains the best firearm
investment I've made. The enjoyment of owning
that superlative rifle has long since eclipsed its initial cost.

Another vote for the Springfield M2 (M1922). It's my most accurate .22LR rifle. Some of the Winchester Model 52s are supposed to be exceptional, but Anschutz seems to be king of the hill today.

My H&R M12 (single-shot, bolt action) which I got through the CMP. With its fine set of iron competition sights, it shoots very well at 50-100 yards.

It's hard to argue with the above recommendations of Anschutz and Kimber rifles, but for an economical choice, don't overlook the Marlin 2000L bolt gun. One of these can be had in the $500-600 price range new. My rifle has the Williams peep sight with Lyman globe up front. The 22" heavy barrel and microgroove rifling deliver consistent one hole groups for me indoors from a rest. I installed the 5 shot biathlon kit on mine. With the adjustable stock this rig is an inexpensive, reliable and accurate option if you're looking for a .22 target rifle.

Ditto what Roadrunner said. H&R M-12 with competition sights is the most accurate .22 I've shot. CMP has just about sold out though, I doubt they are still available.

My beloved but gone Anchutz M54 sporter was great but my Rem 541T is close if not as good. A trigger job on my Ruger 10-22 Sporter really help also as I went from 14lbs to 3.5. :)

Man, you guys are really serious. I've got a little Marlin 60SS that I wouldn't take anything for. Bought it new this past winter. It cost 99.00 and I added a 50.00 Simmons 3-9x40 scope. It's got a feed tube that'll hold 15 rounds and the darn thing will put all 15 into the size of a quarter at 50 yards without even trying. And I've shot empty shotgun shells off railroad ties at 100 yards with it. Most fun thing I've got to shoot. :D

PS: I've got witness'!!!! :D
