Mossy 590A1 18.5" Tube Extension

Hello all,

I realize that this has been hashed out many times in the last few years, but I'm unsure of how things stand currently.

I have 590A1 18.5" and I want to get a +2 tube extension that will fit flush with the end of the barrel.

This is what I've got so far:

*Vangcomp makes +1 extension

*Max100 used to, but apparently no longer, make a +2 extension

*Nordic makes tube extensions of varying lengths, but I not sure they are compatible with a 590A1 18.5"

*Choate either did or does make a +2 that they list as a +1

Are there other options I don't know about? Does anyone have experiences or advice they can share?

Thanks!

Hey Treker

You pretty much listed the ones that I've heard about. And if you've already researched the Choate extension you might already know this. But it could be useful for anyone else looking into this topic, which has become pretty popular.

The Choate extension is listed as a +1, because that's what it is if you use their supplied follower and spring. But if you use the factory follower and cut a Wolff spring down to around 29-30", the extension is a perfect +2. I did it on mine and it turned out perfect...exactly what I was looking for. It extends flush with the barrel on an 18.5" 590A1, and the finish is very close to the parkerized finish on the shotgun. Screws on nicely, and allows for a mount for a light, laser, sling, etc.

In addition, I couldn't ask for better customer service from Choate. Their response times are outstanding, excellent service when you call with questions, issues, etc. Very fast shipping. And they're eager to work with you to make right anything that you're not happy with on your order. Unfortunately I had exactly the opposite experience with Nordic components. More of the typical treatment you'd get from a local gun store that doesn't appreciate your business and treats you like you're more of an annoyance than a customer.

Hope that helps!

That is a damn nice extension. Just wondering if the steel and finish are worth doubling the price. Also, it looks like the sling mount might not be able to be removed.

Roadrash - Know anyone that's installed this thing?

I have no personal experience with this extension, just found it while surfing one day.I do know Sand J hardware have a good reputation for making quality products.

I just assumed the sling plate was held in place by the coupling nut,and was easily removable.

My only concern about the +2's, which I have one of (Max100) is that they are kinda long, right there at the end, and unsupported so susceptible to a good WHACK. The Vang Comp, not so much. Machined steel tubes are probably better than sheet steel tube cobbled together if you have to go +2.

It isn't the magazine extension you have to worry about.

It's the thin metal threads on the end of the shotgun magazine tube that are far more subject to damage. Therefore barrel clamps are a good idea IMHO, not to protect the extension, but to protect the magazine tube it's attached to.

Advantage goes to the 590 over the 870 here, since the 590 magazine tube is a DIY owner replacement, if it's damaged.

Last I heard, Choate was building the magazine tube as desired for the 590A1, but did not have it added to the catalog. It would be worth a phone call to them to find out for sure, I'd think.

Advantage over Remington? Perhaps, as long as you don't have a Mossberg 500. To extend its capacity don't you have to replace the barrel and magazine?

Can't add extensions to 500s, unless you swap out the mag tube for one from a 590 and a barrel from a 590 too - which in effect makes it a 590, not a 500. The 500 mag tube is closed at the muzzle end, save for the hole for the barrel screw. No way to add an extension to it.

Lee. That was my point, which is getting slightly off topic since the op wants to know about adding a +2 to a 590. I just wanted to flag how it is impractical to do so with a 500.
