Mossburg...

There seem to be good deals on those black Mossburg shotguns everywhere around here. Are these pretty good? I don't have a good 12ga shotgun. (Yet)
It's also my first visit to this section of THF. Please excuse me if this question has been asked before.

If you are refering to the Mossberg 590 series...yes they are great shotguns I have the 590 security model, parkerized, heat shield, bayo lug, holds 8-9 2 3/4 shells, synthetic stock all black.I.M.O. you can't go wrong with a Mossy or a Remmy !

Any of the Big Four(Mossberg, Ithaca, Remington and Winchester) makes a darn good choice,KR, and don't be a stranger. This IS the best shotgun resource on the Net.

Try a search for 500, 590, Mossberg and Big Four for some input.

The Mossies are not my first choice, but they're a good second choice, IMO. For those not weaned on a Wingmaster, just as good...

Mossy pumps are good but Mossy semi-autos really suck. I don't think Mossy has ever made a successful semi-auto.

I like Mossberg pumps. I've owned several. They are inexpensive, reliable, easy to work on and mods are plentiful. I tend to prefer them to Remingtons (although a super gun as well) because of the top tang mounted safety and the non- obstructed loading area. At work, they tend to get checked out of the gunroom before the wingmasters. As mentioned previously, the Ithaca 37 is a great pump gun as well.

In the 32 years...

...I've owned guns, the ONLY shotguns I've ever owned were Mossberg pumps. I don't shoot nearly as much as some of these guys, but in all those years I've never had a mechanical failure of any kind, and some of them were bought in "well" used condition.

I was kinda in a hurry when I went by the shotgun rack with those beautiful black Mossburgs on sale. (I was trying, and I did, get to the only P22 in the store before somebody else did.)
And it's OK regarding the "pumps". I prefer pump shotguns. I just got used to them. When I was young (back in the Jurassic Period :) Yeah, me and the dinosaurs.) and we didn't have much to eat. My Daddy would take his Wingmaster to "turkey shoots". We got a LOT of turkeys. (And sometimes, Country hams. :))
By the way, some of those Mossy models had eight (I think) little compensation holes on top of the muzzle end of the barrel. I figured this was for recoil when shooting deer slugs. Did I figure right? :) It was just a quick look to admire, maybe they ALL were compensated.

Those Mossies were probably the 835, a derivative of the 500 that's chambered for the 3 1/2" howitzer magnum. I shot one once, wioth a trap load. Nice gun.

The ports are to reduce the kick, in theory. Not everyone loves them.

All in all, the Mossies are maybe the second or third best pump currently made, and there's not all that much difference between the Big Four.

The 870 and 37 may last a bit longer, but basically unless you're a 100 round a day shooter, it just means your great grand kids will note it's getting loose instead of your grandkids.
