mossberg vs rem 870?

Altho there is nothing wrong with a mossberg the remington 870 is twice the gun.Remington came out with the 870 express to compete pricewise with the lesser quality mossberg. The 870 express is still a more robust gun.

I love my mossberg. I never liked the feel of the 870. A Mossberg 500 will last forever.

Mine is a 590, so it is one hell of a tough gun.

I have both M590 and 870, and in taking them apart, I don't see anything "more robust" about the 870. I really like them both. The 870 is the wifes "house gun". The 590 is mine. I love the ghost ring sights on my 590. I would say they are equal.

You're always going to get brand name loyalists saying that "My _________ is better." They should and I agree with 'em! I've hade both Mossys and Remingtons, carried both on duty, and taught dozens of classes in which both were used. Which carries the edge? Though there are deffinately individual exceptions in the case of both manufacturer, it is the one in your hands that is hands down the best gun inthe world. You make it work - the shotgunner is the end answer, not the gun in this case. I love 'em both.

(Though I'd have to give the edge of best finish and overall average for slightly slicker action to Remington for the Police grade guns I've seen. But then again, the Mossy's price gives them the edge on thier behalf... So If someone's gonna give me a gun and I have a choice, make it a Remington - I'll buy Mossys with my own dollar though.)

My first pump gun was an 870 but my my prefrence is with the Mossberg. Its an "ergonomics" issue. I find it easier to locate the slide unlock button and the safety switch is more intuitive on the Moss. However both are mechanically high quality guns and either is an good choice.

The Remington 870 is a a better shotgun in every way.

Comparing a 870 to mossy is like comparing a Colt Python to a Rossi.

I've shot 870s since Ike was president. There's 6 here now. I use them for everything, and they'll set up for everything from trap to WWIV. 870s are incredibly durable.

All the same, the grounds' not exactly littered with worn out 500s. I think that a 500 will wear out faster than an 870, but I doubt it'll happen with the first owner, more likely his or her grandkids.

Get the one that feels best....

I had an 870 while my twin brother owned a Mossberg 500..I was looking at the mossy whlie in the shop and didn't like the feel of it..Both are great guns in my opinion..If I had to go with a mossy it would be a 590 with ghost rings sights, heat shield and bayonut lug..Until that shotgun falls into my lap, I'ma stick with the Remington and shoot Bambi, Thumper, Tigger and Pooh..

Have owned 3 870's and 1 Mossberg 500. Liked the stock fit on the 500 and the safety location. The 500 was a bit trickier to strip and clean, but no big problem. What I did not like was the cheap spotwelds Mossberg used to tie the action bars to the yoke up front. They broke while I was goose hunting and I was not happy. Don't know if they fixed the issue or not, but I had them pinned and sold it pronto.

The stock on my 870's is not quite a comfortable to me but is okay, the safety is acceptable and the slide release is second nature. My last purchase had burrs in the barrel extension cutout, which caused the bolt to hang up when it got hot at the skeet range, but a couple of passes with a ring knife took care of that quickly. I notice the express model does not get the same care that the Wingmaster does, but then its just minor stuff.

That shotgun will never fall into your lap. You cannot have ghost rings and a heat shield on a 590. It's one or the other.

I like the mossbergs better than the 870s. The controls just seem to be in the right place. I like the safety on the reciever where I can see it, not the trigger guard. I especially hate having the bolt release in front of the trigger guard where I have to move a hand to hit it.

Both are great shotguns. Many people say the 870s quality and feel is better but the Mossys controls are much better located and easier to operate.

The controls make no difference. If you think they do study up a tad.
