Mossberg vs. Maverick

Swiss Shooter

I'm really tempted to move out of the handgun sector and buy myself a shotgun. Since I'm a student and my finances are limited, I'm looking at pump actions. 500s are a bit cheaper than 870s, and a Maverick 88 is half the price of a Mossberg. The quality is supposed to be high on both of them, though. Can somebody shed some light on this for me? If the Maverick's a decent gun not made in the East, I can use the money saved from a 500 to buy another 1000 rounds. Or another handgun.

maverick

my buddy has a maverick pump shotgun,18in barrel,7 shot, synthetic stock and foreend pretty nice gun . i seen them on website for around $199

I found that website. I see the service center is in Texas. Are they made there, too? I don't buy anything that's not American or European.
Btw, dollar prices don't help much - I live in Switzerland. But thanks anyway.

Maverick is owned and produced by Mossberg. I believe they are assembled in Mexico. The options are limited on Mavericks, but they are supposed to be a good shotgun. hpg

The Maverick 88 is almost identical to the Mossberg 500 except for the safety and the forearm. It can accept most M500 accessories, though you'd need to purchase a Mossberg 500 Action Slide assembly to use aftermarket foreends on it, like the Surefire. I've owned several Mossberg and Remington pump guns, but I consider the Maverick to be the best value for the money and it's what I currently keep for home defense.

I've owned a Maverick 88 for around 10 years now and it's performed flawlessly. I've put a LOT of rounds through it and I've been harder on it than I should have... but it doesn't seem to mind at all. I also have a Mossberg 835, but the Maverick still sees all the field action except during turkey season (my older Maverick doesn't have screw out chokes.)

The main reason I prefer to carry the Maverick in the field is the light weight of it. It's a real dove-buster with the 28" barrel and points great for clays or whatever. If you need to save a few bucks, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a Maverick (I'll probably get another one when/if this one gives out... I've already gotten WAY more than $150 worth of use out of it.)

Maverick 88 OK

I got mine at Academy for 137.00. Put a Limbsaver on it and it eats anything. Mine has the 28" barrel. Will be getting an 18" barrel soon. Fine gun for the money, and you can put a Knoxx.com stock on it with the savings. Nothing beats a S/G down the hallway.
