Mossberg tactical 22.

I was doing some research looking for a cheap AR style .22 rifle and I came across an advertisement pertaining to the Mossberg tactical 22. Does anyone have any experience with this rifle? Is there a cheaper or same cost alternative to it? Also, where are they for sale, because I cannot find them anywhere?
 
We looked at the Mossberg when considering a purchase for our son. As stated above it does have a cheap feel. We were told about returns concerning feeding weakness. Not sure if that would be a clip problem or rifle. After all was said and done we ended up getting the S&W M&P 15 - 22. It cost twice as much as the Mossberg, but has been an error free rifle and holds a very consistant aim.
What we really didn't like about the Mossberg is the fake AR skin. The S&W has a detachable upper from the lower and is identical to its big brother calibers, outside of the piston vs gas.
I would check around some more before buying it. We were told by several local dealers and individuals that it is worth it to spend the extra $$ on the S&W or the Ruger SR22
 
Thank you for the responses, I was starting to think I was the only one looking at this rifle. None of the gun shops by me have the Mossberg in stock, so I would have to buy it online and ship it to my FFL without having the ability to fire it first. I have had a chance to look at the Ruger SR 22 rifle. It was nice, and seemed solid, but like Darren said, it’s more than twice the price of the Mossberg. I can’t see spending $450 for a plinker when the Mossberg can be found for $200 on sale, provided it will shoot consistently. I had a feeling it would probably feel cheaply made based on the price point. As long as it is range dependable like seansean says it is, it looks like I will give it a shot. The extra $250 dollars I would save over the ruger or M&P I can put towards the slide upgrade I was looking at for my Sig P226 .22lr. Hopefully I won’t regret my decision later on. If so, I will personally PM Darren and tell him he was right.

I will post a review once a buy it, and have a chance to run some rounds through it.

Are there any other issues with it? How is the breakdown for cleaning? Are you able to find accessories easily? Did you mount a scope, and if so, how?
 
Breakingdown and cleaning is very much a pain in the butt. That is one of the main reasons we went with the M&P. The M&P breaks down like standard AR, M4,M16 frames with simple rear and forward takedown pins. The Mossberg has a million little screws and steps to break down. For our purpose we felt it would be to hard for our son and we wanted him use to the standard breakdown process for when he graduates to the 223 and 7.62.

Mossberg clearly has no idea what an AR-15 is.

It's like they designed their gun around the silhouette of an AR, but everything else about that gun is full of ***.

If you want a .22 AR-15, get the Smith & Wesson M&P-15/22
 
Our local Cabelas store had a similar deal, pretty tempting but the reviews are definitely mixed for the Mossberg. The same store also had the Colt M4 .22cal for $379 which sounded pretty good....
 
^^The Colt/Umarex is closer, but is still not an AR. It's just a generic .22 action wrapped up to look like an AR, similar to GSG and their .22 guns.

Again, S&W makes a real deal AR-15 in .22 caliber.
 
My buddy at work had one for a few days but returned it. It constantly jammed, he couldn't get through 10 rounds without having at least a couple jams. I'm sure this gun must of been a fluke though, because I have a hard time believing anyone would mass produce a gun that functioned as poorly as this.

But they do feel cheap, I won't argue that. A lot of plastic.
 
Update:

I purchased the Mossberg from Budsguns, and had it shipped to my FFL. I have to say, I was very disappointed when it finally came it. I heard it felt cheap, but when I picked it up, it felt REALLY cheap. I thought I was holding something for ToysRus. It also looked cheesier in real life than it did in the online picture. Needless to say I did not accept the transfer. Now I am out the $50 transfer fee my FFL charges no matter what, $25 fee to ship it back, and 10% restocking fee buds charges. Plus, I didn’t even get my credit back on my credit card yet because my FFL is waiting for Buds to send the return shipping label. All said and done I am out about $100 for this mistake. I should have listened to some of the advice that was given before I made the purchase. On a positive note, I did buy the M&P 15-22 while I was at my gunbroker. I was between the MOE version and the standard version. The standard version was tagged at $499, and the MOE $649. I couldn’t see spending $650 for a 22 plinker so I picked up the standard. After the Buds fiasco, I think my broker took pity on me and sold me the M&P for 490 total out the door including NJ tax, and NCIC. All I have to say is the M&P is sweet.
 
I looked a quite a few of the tactical .22's this last week end and was sadly disappointed in the S&W. I was really interested because of it's similarities to an actual AR but it would be last on my list between it, the Ruger and the Sig. Personally between those 3 I'd take the Ruger. Fit, finish, feel was a tie with the Sig but the Ruger is a known, reliable platform with the best, most readily available magazines in the business. Similarities to an actual AR may be a "small" plus but far from a requirement and I'd rather have a better gun.

But I didn't like the idea of paying $400-$500 for a tactical .22 when I can get a .223 AR for just over $500 though so I passed on all of them.

If I was the OP I'd buy a plain jane Ruger carbine, new or used, and put it in an aftermarket stock. I've always poo-poo'd them but I handled a 10/22 in an archangle stock and it felt almost as solid as the Ruger and Sig, better than the S&W. Price for the stock kit (complete with plastic bayonet:confused:) was $130 which would put the total price for a new gun and the stock kit at $320-$330. It'll be light years ahead of the Mossberg.

I just recently bought and installed the Archangel stock on my 10/22. I found it on Overstock for $115 with free shipping... I got it to go shooting with my wife and her S&W 15-22

Precision_shooter, that’s one nice plinker. I would consider that for one of my future acquisitions, but after dropping $500 on my 15-22, I am going to need a few months of saving before picking something else up.

How hard was the archangel kit to install? Does it have to be taken off every time you want to clean your 10/22 and/or how does it impact cleaning and maintenance?

Cleaning was a huge factor when considering my .22lr purchase. As Darren had mentioned in his earlier post, the Mossberg has a lot of little screws. When I looked at the Mossberg at my FFL, I didn’t realize how many screws there were. It looked like a real pain to get them all out. I could easily imagine losing them on a consistent basis, and dreading giving the Mossberg the proper cleaning and maintenance a .22 requires. The M&P is ridiculously easy to clean. Pull out the pin, open the barrel, slide out the bolt, and start cleaning.

I ran about 150 rounds through my new 15-22 today and I have to say it was nice. I did have one round that failed to fire, getting bent and lodged in the ejector port during my first 50 rounds. It was easily cleared in less than 5 seconds. My next 100 rounds were flawless. Maybe not as accurate as a 10/22, but pretty close and very smooth none the less.
