Mossberg safeties ok?

Several years ago (10?) when I used to play with shotguns a
little more, I ran across no less than 3 mossbergs where the
safety had broken at the screw hole. (One of the guns were
mine). I have avoided the Mossbergs since. Recently was
contemplating getting a shotgun for my collection and have
been doing some research at TLF and have found NO reference
to broken safety switches on the Mossbergs! Is this no longer
a problem or was I just under some sort of curse back then?
Curious because I want to know if I need to be considering
the mossbergs again. (Don't know why but I like the idea
of the bayonet lug on the 590's... Must be a forbidden fruit
sorta thing:) ). Anyone else have this problem? Thanks!

There's been a few reports here. Someone makes a steel button to fix this. Maybe a Mossy fan can point you right.

You can get the steel button in Regular and Large sizes for about $20 IIRC, and I know that Brownells stocks them. They are a MUST for a mossie.

The older Mossberg safeties were thinner and have a solid base underneath . The newer ones are skeletonized underneath , thicker and have a one way slot screw.
We aren't having trouble with the new safeties . We have replaced hundreds of the old ones . If yours has the one way screw , your ok based on our experiences .

Thanks guys! I'd probably look at the metal safety eventually
but a) Don't like buying a gun that automatically needs fixing,
and b) Can't afford to spend money when I don't have to (too
many other toys to buy :) ). Guess I'll look at the Mossies
when I scope out the remingtons, winchesters, and benelli's.

I have a 500a with a broken safety. Its been that way for a few years now. I need to get that fixed one of these days. Ive owned this for about 11 years and the previous owner had it for a few before that

ez04, just put a machine screw in it with a locknut for now, at least then you will have a functional safety until your new one arrives.
